I took my two-year old son today for the first time. We had a blast! They have a few different rooms with trains and towns set up that you can view. They allow you to walk through the rooms where people are working on the landscaping. Lastly, they have a room called the "Little Engine's Room." It's "Thomas" themed and has tons of activities: coloring, train table, build your own train tracks, and more!

Everyone was so friendly and I was blown away at the amount of work and detail that has gone into the museum.

It's a MUST SEE! Oh, and did I mention it's FREE! They are only opened on Saturday's from 10-3 pm.

The work done by the museum builder's staff on the ET&WNC layout is really great. The attention to detail in compressing and modeling the trackage Johnson City to Cranberry, especially the work in the Doe River Gorge make this part of the museum a must visit.

If you're a model railroad enthusiast, you really need to see this set up. Staffed by volunteers, they are recreating the route of the Tweetsie Railroad, complete with specific tunnels, buildings, etc. There is also a small room with Thomas the Tank wooden train set & play table for the little ones. The only complaint we had was this place is absolutely impossible to locate. Touted as the " best kept secret" one can understand why. There is absolutely no signage. Students on campus have no clue, Google Maps wanted to send us 10 mins away from the location. Even calling the museum was no help, because the person answering the phone was a volunteer from out of the area & couldn't help us. We went to the Chamber and of Commerce hoping they could help, but they were closed. After going around in circles for about 15 minutes, we finally ended up going to the Fire Dept...not only did they not know where it was, they've never heard of it. With help, they found it & gave us directions. We got the correct street address, but the street had been dissected by a student walkway. Finally made it after going round the block; tucked away in a little corner. We really enjoyed it & found the volunteers very helpful & friendly. Enjoy this place-if you can find it!😉

We took our 10 year old grandson & we all loved it!! I would recommend you get the scavenger hunt paper when you go in so while you are looking at trains layout, you can be looking for stuff on paper!! They have classes we are planning to take our grandson to next summer when he visits. If your family has ever done train layouts or more del trains, this is very enjoyable!!

We have visited this place several times with my children. My son loves it. There is some great history here. Fun place for kids and adults. If you aren't into trains, you will still enjoy it and come away with an appreciation of the models. If you are into trains then you will go nuts here. It's a blast to look at all of the amazing details and try looking through displays to find the random objects on their scavenger hunt. Several different layouts here as well. You can even see some that are in the process of being built. The only draw back is the fact that they are only open on Saturday's from 10:00-3:00. I would highly recommend trying to make a trip here. Also, a nice brisk fall morning kind of adds to the experience. Visit here and have fun.

This is a must see exhibit when in Johnson City. The layouts are nothing short of spectacular. The exquisite details and the marvelous and meticulous skill is apparent everywhere one looks. Each item is in scale to the layout and the obvious love that goes into the building of the layout is obvious to even the most casual observer.
This museum is absolutely a must see.

We brought our 2 yo grandson and he loved it. We have also brought a group of elderly folks who also loved it. There is a play room for kids who get bored quickly looking at things and want hands on.

More model trains than museum--popular with the kids. Sometimes you encounter very friendly volunteers--sometimes not so much. It's free--donations welcome--so how can you really complain? Take the kids and enjoy. Just don't expect expert/fanatical archives, etc.

The trains in this museum are great for people of all ages. The detail work is exceptional. Also great for a rainy day activity.

This is a relatively small museum of railroad memorabilia. It has a children's playroom, a room with a number of layouts and cases of items from railroad collectors on display. There is also a hidden room, that is not well signed, but if you ask a volunteer, they will direct you to a large layout that is in the progress of being built. There is a train running but the exterior is still in the process of being decorated, but it is worth seeing so you will know what goes into making such a large layout. There is also a small table layout in the room. Worth going to if you are a railroad fan.
