Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park protects the land that was the location...

Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park protects the land that was the location of several important historic events that occurred in the late 18th century. Leaving the English colonies, settlers began arriving along the Watauga Old Fields, in search of a new life on what was Cherokee land. John Carter, one of the primary political, military and business leaders of this era, and his son Landon, built a home, the Carter Mansion, three miles from Sycamore Shoals. This structure is the oldest standing frame house in Tennessee, dating back to the mid to late 1770s.

They have special historical events and for the history buff it's a lovely place to visit. Before I begin, I need to apologize to the woman in charge of the visitor center the day we were there. The park grounds are open all the time but the center closes at 4. We live more than a day's drive away and have never made it when it was open. Once again I hurried down the interstates and... More

Thank you for the review, Paul. We're really sorry about your rushed visit through the exhibits and your fall! Based on your star rating it seems like you still enjoyed your visit overall. We hope you will come back again sometime. We do a play called Liberty! in July that tells the story of the fort and how it connects... More

We were able to use the park for a Campout. Wide open. Nice amphitheater. A pool onsite but wasn't open. It is next to the hospital and in the middle of town but you wouldn't know it. Stop here and enjoy the history.

We enjoyed walking thru the displays in the building and watching the short video about the fort. Outside the fort itself was very cool . The displays were informative and we learned something in a fun way.

It is free day to day there is special events that may cost. It is open daylight to dust. The welcome center is clean and cool. Great place to walk sight see, bring your lunch to eat, or walk the trails.
