Raccoon Mountain is a man-made lake, where water is pumped up by TVA in the daytime, and released though turbines deep within the mountain at night. This provides electricity for the nearby Chattanooga area. The mountain has some spectacular views of the Tennessee River valley,...More

We were driving around and found this by accident. Was very interesting. The attendant was very knowledgable and explained the history to us. She was very nice. wish I would have gotten her name.

Beatiful view from the top and no crowds. The maps of how big the TVA is and how the Raccoon Dam works to generate electricity was interesting.

This is a great area to get away from traffic to ride a road bike, a mountain bike, to run on the road or to run on the trails. Lots of nice views from up here.

We had visited the visitor center for Raccoon Mountain Pumping Storage facility we accidentally took the loop around the lake or water storage facility. Basically and man made lake with a very long dam comprising at least half the sides to create the lake.
