The Bessie Smith Cultural Center and Museum is under utilized by the community-in my humble opinion. It gets a good crowd during the Bessie Smith Strut during the River Bend Music Festival. However, it also offers other events open to the public, like the First Friday Music series that happens May thru July. I went during the strut and on... More

I took my children down to our first visit to The Bessie Smith Cultural Center after learning the current exhibit was about the Negro Baseball Leagues. The exhibit featured uniforms and descriptions of some of the most famous Negro League teams including the Homestead Grays, Newark Eagles and Kansas City Monarchs. There were also pictures and descriptions of the Chattanooga... More

Nice, educational museum. Cool artwork on the walls. The staff are pretty friendly. The admission price is reasonable.

I loved my visit to this attraction. My great-grandfather, grandfather, and aunts are featured here. There is so much history and African-American history in Chattanooga. History that you do not find in the history books. My only suggestion would be to include notes on everyone featured.

It was a nice tour and worth a trip to visit on the weekend if you are nearby. There is actually a gallery on the east wing that is dedicated to Bessie Smith. The museum exhibits are on the west wing. There are rotating themes as I understood during the yr. The current exhibit was the local African American history... More

Unless you are a "Brother" or"Sista" you might want to stay away from this location. It is in a bad side of the city where your car can become of an interest. It's party time when the "Strut" is going on.. Just not for everyone.

I was here December 2014, thought this had already posted but not, for a club Christmas party. It was my first time here and I enjoyed it the facility is great for an event like ours. We had an outside caterer and the food was excellent. There was plenty of parking. Our club will probably go back next year.

We are glad we visited the Bessie Smith Hall. We spent about 2 hours learning and reflecting. We gained information about Africa, Slavery, and local Chattanooga History that we never knew existed. We would recommend this museum be added as a "must see" stop for anyone living in or visiting the area.

Had a great evening at the Bessie. Good blues by Rick Rushing. Great food and dancing made this an evening to remember.

I remember when they were first opening the Bessie Smith museum. A friend of mine and I were avid Bessie fans and knew a lot of info about her and had collected her records for years. They didn't really have that much that was supposedly Bessie's on display. What I remember was the audacity of the procurer asking me to... More
