- Becky M5 contributionsThis Chapel is worth spending time’sI can’t put into words how beautiful this church is. It is stunning. The guide provided a great overview of the church and its beginnings. If able, take a walk around the woods to see the statutes. A very moving experience.Visited October 2023Travelled on businessWritten 7 October 2023
- Mary Jo C4 contributionsA sweet respite stopWhat's the opposite of tourist trap? A quiet, free respite? Chapel of the Hills is just that. This meticulously cared for replica of a Norwegian church is set on lovely grounds in a residential area of Rapid City. The original chapel was built in 1104 and the decorative imagery reveals the tension between pagan animal worship and the tug of Christianity. Also includes a museum of settlers household goods, a gift shop, and a prayer walk on the hill side.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 May 2024
- James MGuyton, Georgia473 contributionsPeace at the Chapel.Another stop on our South Dakota trip was the Chaple in the Hills. The chapel is a reproduction of one in Norway. It is open from May to September from 8 am to 8 pm. Worship services are at 7:30 pm Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, during the summer. You can schedule your wedding at the chapel by calling 605-342-8281 or 605-343-9426. There are limited hours in April and October. Admission is by donations to the chapel. The area is well-kept and manicured. The drive to the chapel sets the tone for reflection and relaxation. At the top of the hill, there is a paved parking lot available. The wide walking paths and the meditation trail make stopping for a photo or selfie easy. The chapel's exterior is beautifully designed and provides insight into the peace and beauty inside. Around the outside of the chapel is a covered corridor with windows to look inside the chapel and out to the rest of the property. The beauty inside the chapel matches the beauty outside. The grass-roofed house on the way in is used as a storehouse (Stabbur) in Norway. This one was built in Norway and then shipped to the local site for reassembly. It is used for the visitor center and gift shop. The log cabin is a replica of a Norwegian cabin. It is used as a museum. I wished I had taken more photos, but I was mesmerized by the experience. The chapel is not only a marvelous example of foreign architecture, but it is also a holy place and a great place to relax and meditate. I felt relaxed and rejuvenated after leaving there. I also learned how people lived at the time. After I visited the cabin, I was reminded how lucky I am to live today instead of then. I hope everyone who visits the chapel walks away with the same peaceful feeling it gave me. The chapel has a web page and a Facebook page for more information.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 September 2024

Enlivened all the senses - beautiful to see, quite sound of birds on the prayer walk. Great history. Could feel the presence of God. Evening services offered Memorial Day through Labor Day 3 days per week.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 September 2024
- Btimes2605Bismarck, North Dakota58 contributionsThere is a peace to the placeWe had a few minutes so we thought we would head this direction just to say that we saw it. We were both very happy that we did. It was very quiet, very peaceful. Great architecture, I'd like to go to a service there sometime. We took the prayer walk out back, and again it was a nice break from the go go of the rest of the vacation.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 10 September 2024
- Joseph F9 contributionsGreat craftsmenship and inspirarionalThe Chapel was in a beautiful setting and very serene. The attendants were very informative and delightful. The Norwegian log home reconstructed was also nice to see. We went on their prayer walk...a short path behind the Chapel. Without GPS it was a little hard to find as it's up a road in a residential area.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 September 2024
- jcfwebLouisville, Kentucky12 contributionsAn art of CraftsmenshipHaving sometime to kill, we set out to find the Chapel in the Hill. It sits inside a residential area. This wooden replica of a Scandinavian chuch is beautiful. The staff were exceedingly helpful and friendly. The Chspel itself would be lovely f or a small wedding. Both the gift shop and a log cabin rebuilt on the sight are also worth seeing. There's a prayer walk behind the Chapel if you are inclined to spend some time in prayer. We were delighted we took the time. There also wild turkey's strutting on the grounds in front of the ChapelVisited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 September 2024

We happened upon the chapel and were glad we did. There was a gentleman there that explained about the chapel. He asked that we social distanced but only required a mask in the gift shop, we did not go in. You could walk around the chapel and look inside, the door was shut so you could not enter (half door so you could see in) the chapel was beautiful. There is also a prayer walk that was peaceful and beautiful. There is another building you could take a look at, we did not look in because there were others there and it began to rain. If you are in the area check it out.

The whole experience from the entrance to the gift shop was delightful. Once you enter and park in their ample lot, you walk from the gift shop up to the stave church, which is an exact Norwegian replica . The grounds and setting are beautiful, with well manicured lawns, flowers, and artful stone work. Peaceful is the best descriptive word. The church buildings are all at the foot of the Hills forest. The inside of the church is amazing, so much intricate woodwork, including animals and dragons. A narration plays inside as you tour on your own. We found the small sliding window which allowed lepers to follow services from outside the building. There is also a small museum set off to the side holding many Norwegian pieces of interest. Finally, not to be missed, is the meditation trail in back of the church. It wanders through the forest with several places to sit amongst statuary for reflection, prayer, and meditation. This was such a refreshing change.

This was a project to recognize the Norwegian heritage in Rapid City and the surrounding area and the home of Evangelical Lutheran Vespers radio program, dedicated in 1969, it is a replica of another church in Norway.
It is a memorial of sorts, for the sturdy pioneers who came to South Dakota for opportunity and adventure.
The grounds are well cared for, there are various historical objects and buildings and the site can be enjoyed in an hour or less, depending on how much time is spent in the small home museum and gift shop.
It was quiet and peaceful on the Sunday afternoon we visited in Sept., close to the end of the season, but the gift shop operator was welcoming and glad to answer questions or make recommendations for local events or places.
All in all, my wife, of Norwegian descent, said our visit satisfied her Norwegian sense by being there and enjoying the prayer walk, history and atmosphere.

I live a couple hours away and have visited the chapel several times over the years. My son and I decided to do some "tourist" things in our area this summer and this is one of the places we visited. It is a beautiful stave church, an exact replica of one in Norway. The carvings and woodwork are beautiful and looking at them closely you can see how intricate some of them are. Behind the church is a bell and tower, and a medication/prayer trail. It was around 100 degrees the day we visited, so we did not walk the trail, but we will comeback and do that on a cooler day. There is a small gift shop in a building that was built in Norway and then taken apart and shipped to the US and put back together. There is also a small museum with Norwegian antiques in an old log cabin. The volunteers are friendly and very knowledgeable and willing to share that knowledge with you.

Friendly guide greeted us at the entrance and explained the site. She offered our 3 kids (ages 11, 9, 6) the Chapel in the Hills 'scavenger hunt' of the property - a small clipboard with about a 10 question worksheet and a search of the garden gnomes found throughout the site. Our kids loved this activity and it was a fun way to engage them in the experience. The chapel itself is beautiful and has a very informative audio recording inside which explains the history and includes music - it was quite moving. Another building on the site contains many items that would be found in a traditional Norwegian home, this was interesting. The small gift shop had a nice assortment of locally made items and books.
We walked only a small part of the trail behind the chapel, but it was quite nice.
Highly recommend a visit here!

Really looked forward to this visit since we love the Norway area in Epcot. That was our only frame of reference. This is a peaceful beautiful space and location. You drive through neighborhoods to get to it, but SO worth it! Get a feel for Norway, and spend some time in the prayer path and benediction trail in the back. The volunteer docents clearly love this place and love to share about it. I bought some benediction cards in the gift shop to share with family back home. You will not be disappointed!

The construction and architecture of the church is beautiful. The surrounding grounds are bucolic and peaceful. The church and setting has an affect on visitors. I noticed how people got quiet and talked softer as they walked in from the parkin lot. I suggest visiting and staying for the Vespers service. The service is from the Lutheran tradition and complements the peaceful and inspiring structure and setting.

Average trip. We arrived at approximately 3:15 pm and made our way inside the park in order to start exploring our surroundings. There were several informational plaques located along the walkways that detailed the history of the area and provided insight into what we were seeing in front of us. There was a log cabin on site that contained several original furnishings and which gave us insight into how people lived during that timeframe. There was gift shop located next to the log cabin, that had several items for sale. On top of the hill sat a church that one could go inside and explore. There was a prerecorded audio playing on a loop, that explained the historical significance of the church, and also talked about the structural design of the church. Next to the church was a prayer walk, that contained several sculptures of prominent religious figures, as well as biblical messages next to each sculpture. The walk was short and easy to complete. There was also another walk nearby that took you through the forest, which was also short and easy.
Tip: I recommend spending 45 minutes here if you truly want to see everything.

We were greeted by friendly staff and then took the short walk to the chapel. The workmanship is excellent, such a beautiful and unique building. We enjoyed the short prayer path through the forested area as well as a visit to the tiny museum and gift shop.

We made our way out to this quaint little church. We couldn't wait to see it. It took us a while to find it, as it's in the back of a neighborhood, which was a little odd. Finally, we saw it and then realized it was closed for the season. I'd read so many good things about it that I was really disappointed. There are electric fences up so you can't get anywhere near the chapel. . .. the one redeeming event was that while we sat in the driveway outside the chapel, we realized a herd of deer came up to eat their breakfast in the early morning dew. That was pretty neat to watch.

We are sorry you came in our off season and hope you can return again some day when the gates are open. The gates and non-electric fence are there as a safety precaution to prevent slips and falls in the winter season on our sloping walkways. Thank you for respecting the signs.

We do not have a regular congregation here at the Chapel. We do hold evening worship every night of the week at 7:30 PM from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Hopefully you will be able to attend one of our services.

How long do people typically spend here?
Written 26 June 2019
It’s a self-tour so you can spend as long as much time as you want. There is the Chapel, a prayer walk, and a gift shop to look through and the onsite staff will help with questions. I’d say 45-60 minutes max if you did everything

Does anyone know if you can still view the outside of this even if it’s closed? Can you walk around the gate for pics?

When our gate is closed, the grounds are closed. Please do not climb over the walls or gate to enter the property. If the gate is open, you are welcome to explore the grounds, etc. Our regular season (when the buildings and gift shop are open) runs from May 1 to Sept. 30. You are always welcome to call us at (605) 342-8281 to inquire whether the grounds are open that day. During nice weather, we try to keep the gate open to accommodate off-season visitors, but cold, icy conditions will hesitate the gate property being closed. Thank you for your understanding.

There are ramped sidewalks leading to and into the chapel, gift shop, and museum. The slopes are rather steep in some places, due to the nature of the terrain. To access the restrooms, there is one step up.

My contact was Craig Lewis and I used an email address. Unfortunately, I cannot post this here. If you like, email me using jannfri@yahoo and identify yourself as needing the email address for Chapel-in-the-hills.
I emailed Craig in January and he sent a response. We set up a time for us to visit and I contacted him several times between January and July. I wish you the best with your wedding plans and I hope this helps you secure the Chapel-in-the=Hills.
