We were really disappointed in this. First off....if you don't take my advise and go anyway, take the complimentary vehicle up the hill. Horribly rutted and could damage a small car. The gift shop was old, dated, dusty, and not much to look at. We...More

If you are a rock hound and love to hear about how the Badlands and the surrounding area (Rapid City, Custer, Hot Springs) consisting of 140+ miles in South Dakota lands are formed, then you should stop here before you begin your travels around the...More

This destination is a tourist trap that time forgot. It's clear the exhibits have not been updated in 2-3 decades. There is very little information about the geology outside of a poorly (and likely locally) produced video. The "theater" is a bare plywood room with...More

We enjoyed the orientation movie and found it quite informative. The museum and the rock shop are both nice. The scenic view is lovely. We enjoyed the wildlife. Although the ground is uneven in places, we enjoyed our walk, and we found the petrified wood...More

This was a neat place to stop and see many examples of petrified wood. It really isn't a petrified forest but more like a bunch of petrified wood in a nice, wooded area. The short hike is really cool with very scenic views of the...More

I read the previous review from the family of 5 and wanted to check it out! I really enjoyed listening to Mr. Scott explain how the Black Hills were formed. My husband fell asleep during the movie so I left to snooze in the museum...More

I'd rec. this place if you are in the Black Hills / Rapid City area looking for something to do - and you have not been to or are not planning to go to some other better known sites for petrified wood. This site makes...More

We stopped here while on vacation with our 3 kids (8, 5, and 2). The power was out due to a storm we followed in to town, so we missed the video some of the other reviewers have mentioned. The Petrified Forest attraction is located...More

Fantastic stop. Best video for explaining the earth, and development of rocks and fossils in simple terms. The accompanying exhibits were curated well. Despite a thunderstorm and hail and power failure, we had a good time and readily forgave the outdated, dusty venue. Spruce it...More
