The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. It is a 1,000 year-old village located on the shores of lovely Lake Mitchell. Each summer students from the University of Exeter, England and Augustana University, Sioux Falls continue the excavation of the site. Tours are given every day during the summer months by knowledgeable guides. Plenty of activities for all ages. Visit the museum, the dig site (located in the Archeodome) and Shoppe Antiquary (a gift shop featuring Native American jewelry, pottery, art and more). Our biggest event of the year is Archeology Awareness Days, held on July 2nd and 3rd, 2016. Open Monday thru Saturday 8:00am - 7:00 pm beginning Memorial Day weekend; open Sundays 10:00am to 6:00pm. Open the rest of the year 9:00am - 6:00pm.

Wow! Thanks for the great review. We agree - the Archeodome is simply awesome, but our museum shines, too!

The Indian Village was very interesting. I find these sort of things amazing and loved seeing the actual archaeological dig. I learned several new things. If you have a couple hours and like old stuff, I would certainly visit.

Truly a treat, we had friends in town from California and they now bring people in, take the time to learn about the settlement of the area and see an actual dig site, educate your kids and yourself!!

This location gave a good view into Native American history. How they lived, tools and weapons they used. It even has an example of a dugout canoe and buffalo skin boat. The museum area is very interesting and the dig site puts you back in...More

I was not expecting to find an archeological dig of such a high quality in small-town Mitchell. Very well done and worthwhile to visit.

Thank you! We are quite proud of what we are doing here to educate folks about the history of the First People. We are also quite honored to be associated with Augustana University (Sioux Falls, SD) and the University of Exeter (Great Britain).

Thank you for the review! We are happy that you enjoyed your visit. Our live dig begins June 13 to July 11, so if you can, stop by again! The excitement in the air is palpable during the live dig.

We found this stop very informative and it was neat seeing an archeological dig site even though nobody was actively working on it when we stopped.More
