Overview
More
An 1880 Train ride is a two-hour, narrated 20-mile round trip between Hill City snd Keystone South Dakota in the beautiful Black Hills. Passengers view vistas of Harney Peak, mining encampments and participate in good old-fashioned fun. Trains follow the original route of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad laid down in the late 1880s to service the mines and mills between Hill City and Keystone. The Black Hills Central Railroad is the oldest continuously operating tour railroad in the nation and operates three steam and two diesel engines throughout the season. One of our steam engines is close to 100 years old!

No assigned seating, no restrooms, can't get out of your seat when the train is moving. Nothing to see but trees and peoples houses. The worst train ride I've even taken. Keystone was equally boring. One tourist shop after another and lots of mediocre restaurants....More

We are sorry to hear you did not enjoy your experience on the 1880 Train. We allow passengers to choose their departure and return times so it makes it difficult to offer assigned seating for all trips. The ride is meant to offer a step...More

It was fun. Glad I went. Interesting history. Got my money's worth. Great break from driving. Took trip from Hill City to Keystone. Enjoyed a few hours in Keystone.

The train ride was absolutely gorgeous, and was enjoyed by every member of our party! That being said, make sure you're fully rested before going or the noise and rhythmic rocking of the train might put you to sleep!

If you have never ridden in a steam train this is great to try. The view os scenic trees and residents. The ride is 10 mile per hour to Keystone Nd takes an hour. They sell popcorn and some snacks on the train. The narrator...More

Thank you for joining us on the 1880 Train and taking the time to post your review. We do offer shoot out experiences and special events for those looking for more lively experience other than the regular ride aboard a vintage steam engine.

This was a fun, family vacation experience, especially if your kids have never been on a train before. Beautiful Black Hills scenery, with quite a few deer sightings. It was a good choice, and will provide nice future memories.

Based on Tripadvisor reviews I felt this was a must do on our trip, uhm, I was wrong. Even the children with families lost interest about halfway through the trip. If you can afford it and feel this is an experience you want I suggest...More

We appreciate you joining us on the Train. The train ride is a unique opportunity to ride aboard an authentic steam engine and refurbished passenger cars while enjoying the scenery, not having to drive. The shuttle option is available on limited rides, so be sure...More

Took my wife and 2 kids on the train, had a fun time! The kids were very excited because it was their first time on the train. About a 2 1/2 hour round trip, or 1 hour one way.

We recommend booking early to ensure there are seats on the ride you prefer. All rides typically sell out. We open for the 2017 season May 14.
