An 1880 Train ride is a two-hour, narrated 20-mile round trip between Hill City snd Keystone South Dakota in the beautiful Black Hills. Passengers view vistas of Harney Peak, mining encampments and participate in good old-fashioned fun. Trains follow the original route of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad laid down in the late 1880s to service the mines and mills between Hill City and Keystone. The Black Hills Central Railroad is the oldest continuously operating tour railroad in the nation and operates three steam and two diesel engines throughout the season. One of our steam engines is close to 100 years old!

The 1880 train is excellent, especially if you are a train buff. When booking, make sure to check the schedule. Steam locomotives are not always used. If you can, book the tour that includes the gunfight. I ordered my tickets online, then picked up at the station in Hill City. You can pick up your tickets after the earlier train... More

This was a very fun experience, my wife and I took the round trip ride starting in Hill City up to Keystone and back. The sites were beautiful and the ride was full of information over the entire trip. The only thing to be aware of is the smell of the oil burning, it can affect you if you are... More

We went on a morning ride from Hill City to Keystone and back to Hill City. The train ride is wonderful and the train staff is very knowledgeable and informative. I don't think it's something you would need to do more than once but for sure once.

This was our first visit to Hills City. While there my wife and I took a stroll through the railroad museum. The 1880 train was beautiful and the antique rail cars worth seeing. Being a railroader myself it was interesting to see a blast from the past and how this railroad helped shape the Black Hills.

I love riding old steam trains and this ride did not let me down. All of the sounds and smells, only added to the ride experience. Be sure to go to the train museum. It is well worth the time.

We decided to try the train on our trip for something different. The history was good and the information about the area was very interesting. We got to see some wildlife during the train ride. We had our 10-11 year old boys and Grandma and Grandpa with us and everyone enjoyed!

We all loved the train, even though our one year-old thought it a little too noisey. Lots of great views from the train.

Even better the 2nd time. Yes we did South Dakota twice it was our 6th state of our 50-State Quest done in May of 1981 the first time. But this review will be our second time around in August of ((1999 not 2016)). Here we saw Mount Rushmore a second time too. It just happened to cross paths in seeing... More

We took the steam engine- this was a great attraction. It was nice to take a break from driving, be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the view with my daughter. If you pick a car in the middle, you are able to get some great views of the engine and cars as you go around some of the... More
