Overview
More
An 1880 Train ride is a two-hour, narrated 20-mile round trip between Hill City snd Keystone South Dakota in the beautiful Black Hills. Passengers view vistas of Harney Peak, mining encampments and participate in good old-fashioned fun. Trains follow the original route of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad laid down in the late 1880s to service the mines and mills between Hill City and Keystone. The Black Hills Central Railroad is the oldest continuously operating tour railroad in the nation and operates three steam and two diesel engines throughout the season. One of our steam engines is close to 100 years old!

We have taken the 1880 Train a number of times over the past 40+ years. We usually buy the round trip ticket. But, you can take the train either from Hill City or Keystone---enjoy the town--and then take another trip back. You will see great...More

We loved this mystical train ride. If you have never been on a steam train this would be highly recommended. The tour guides are very knowledgeable. The scenery is absolutely amazing. If you go on a hot day make sure you have your cold neck...More

We rode the 1800's train from Keystone to Hill City. We were on the 1st train (8:15am), and it wasn't even 1/3 full! The conductor did a great job offering narration and adding humor. We explored the Hill City shops and had lunch before our...More

We booked a reservation on this train after throughly reading their brochure. We went on line and made the reservation for a round trip from Hill City at 10:00 am. We were very disappointed to find out that there were no bathrooms on the train....More

We traveled from Hill City to Keystone. We didn't stay very long in Keystone. If you have a longer lay over, I would recommend having the layover in Keystone vs Hill City. Bathrooms at the train station were clean. There is not assigned seats, which...More

Nice ride from Keystone to Hill City and back. If you want to take the steam train, take the later train rides. They use the Diesel train first thing in the morning until the steam train is ready. Naration of the trip as you go,...More

Thank you for joining us, Joe. The first round trip of the day is always the diesel engine, as you mentioned. The schedule is posted in January, reflecting the diesel engine departures. All of our trips are able to be purchased as one way rides...More

Went with husband and son, the train is cramped on leg room - cannot state that enough. The price at $30 a person for a two hour ride doesn't seem bad until you do it and you realize that you're on an old train with...More

What an opportunity! We started in Keystone and went to Hill City. It was so nostalgic! And there was a guide that talked over the speakers and told a little history. The seats were surprisingly very comfortable and we were able to move around in...More

We recommend booking early to ensure there are seats on the ride you prefer. All rides typically sell out. We open for the 2017 season May 14.

Hello and thank you for your question! As the others have mentioned, it is a bit of a walk to the Alpine Slide, but many people take the opportunity to do so while on a layover so there is no need to worry about parking... More
