An 1880 Train ride is a two-hour, narrated 20-mile round trip between Hill City snd Keystone South Dakota in the beautiful Black Hills. Passengers view vistas of Harney Peak, mining encampments and participate in good old-fashioned fun. Trains follow the original route of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad laid down in the late 1880s to service the mines and mills between Hill City and Keystone. The Black Hills Central Railroad is the oldest continuously operating tour railroad in the nation and operates three steam and two diesel engines throughout the season. One of our steam engines is close to 100 years old!

Favourite activity in Keystone, besides Mt Rushmore of course! Enjoyed the scenery very much. Lots to see along the route between Keystone and Hill City. Enough time to have lunch and get back on board. Great way to spend the day.

This was a last minute "add-on" to our schedule, and it turned out to be such a fun thing to do. We took the 2 hour train ride that goes through beautiful countryside where we saw deer and wild turkeys. There's an excellent (taped) tour guide who provides train & local history and points out the scenic highlights as you... More

Take a couple hours and ride the 1880's train between Hill City and Keystone South Dakota. Before the ride you can tour the railroad museum in Hill City, watch the engineers and brakemen ready the engine by filling it with water from the old tower like the one at the start of the old TV series "Petticoat Junction". They back... More

We took our Mom to South Dakota for her 80th Birthday and she really enjoyed the train ride. It was a nice leisurely ride through the black hills in an old fashioned train. Very nice and informative. This train ride is a great way to spend a few hours relaxing and taking in the sites. Don't expect to go anywhere fast, the train never really picks up speed. The route is scenic.

We rode the train round trip and it was a relaxing and informative. Learned a lot about the local history of the train and the mining that was done in the area. The train was pulled by a steam engine and the conductor gave a recap of the history while the train was moving along the beautiful land. An excellent display of the timeline of the railroad in South Dakota. If you're into trains it's worth the time.

Thank you for stopping by the South Dakota Railroad Museum, Larry! The museum is located right next door to the Hill City Depot and offers the timeline you mentioned, very interesting displays and a new caboose is soon to be added. Those who ride the train receive $1 off their entrance into the museum. More

The train goes from Hill city to Keystone - it is pulled by a steam engine and it's interesting to watch the driver prepare whilst in the station. The staff are all great. There's a snack bar at Hill City and a gift shop at Keystone. Really enjoyable for all the family.
