The island has a long trail all around, taking you to different interesting spots (bird island, butterfly garden etc.). Obviously, we spotted a few alligators (big and small ones). I just fell in love with the view over the marshland.

We walked to the rookery where the herons and other birds nest. We saw so many birds in and around the nests, it was awesome! So glad we decided to walk that far. We also saw an alligator. Would like to go back but with bicycles so we can ride out to the point. This national bird refuge is free... More

Pinckney Island is located just before you go over the bridge to Hilton Head. It is a quiet, no frills wildlife refuge with a good stretch of trails and plenty of opportunities to observe wildlife. Fishing is permitted in the saltwater surrounding the island, but not in the ponds. Keep in mind that to fish can be a bit of... More

We stumbled on this location and it was my top pick at the end of our trip. Ibis Pond is a must to see egrets, herons, and alligators. We spotted many other birds on the short pleasant walk to the pond. This location has multiple walking trails. Due to time constraints, the Ibis Pond area was the only area we... More

Right before the bridge to Hilton Head, make sure you visit Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge if you want an easy hike and amazing wildlife. You don't even have to walk that far and it's free. A short walk to Ibis Pond gave us incredible numbers of egrets, herons, and other amazing birds. There were also turtles and three baby... More

You could spend hours on hours here! Be sure to wear sunscreen and bring water as the path is not covered. Many distances are available for you to walk and the stopping point is back where you started/ park. When we went, we saw an alligator near the bird pond and dolphins swimming in the inter coastal water ways. In... More

Loved it but expect a lot of walking and the path is a bit rough for biking. Don't expect smooth biking trails like around town. Best for mountain bike riding.

A friend took us on a boat ride to Pinckney. It was very beautiful and peaceful. Saw lots of dolphins along.

Others have written excellent reviews this month and last. A few things I would emphasize: (1) Pets are not allowed and (2) This is a totally wild, natural area best suited to experienced birders and hikers--city slickers who show up in flip-flops without bug spray, sunscreen and water just ain't gonna make it. If you have any kind of accessibility... More
