Union POW Camp is No Hogan's Heros

The site is really interesting, but needs updating. It is a shame that it has been allowed to become overgrown. It really needs to be mown and have the paint freshened. We learned much about the Union POW Camp. Why it was located there, the conditions, the war between the states. It is hallow ground.

Interesting. Lots of information and there are things to walk and see no vehicles past the parking area. It's kinda hidden. But worth the find. I was hoping for a brochure but there were none .

I understand the historical significance and that has value but the area is not set up in a way that made much sense to me. You start at the pavilion you see in the pictures and it gives you the history and then maps out the trail. When you follow the trail you see the numbers of where to stop... More

Although we did not tour the house, we went to the re-enactment. Being the first time ever going to one, I was simply amazed and impressed. All the soldiers and their families in "era" dress was so cool! We loved it.

What a wonderful possibility this stockade could be. School children could come and learn about the history and the Confederate States Military Prison. It has great potential but in great disrepair. Very disappointed in the City/County for not appointing money/committee to improve this part of American History.

Civil War buffs will like to see where the Andersonville prisoners were transported in anticipation of Sherman's rampage.

We have been checking yearly on our trips back north. It seems when the gazebo went in they were doing a lot of progress. Since then it seems to come to a stand still. Would like to see some more improvement to the sight since it is of historical significance. The picture boards in the gazebo are nice but would... More

Love the history, but there's not much there to "see." There's a gazebo and a trail. The actual stockade location (as we understand it) is overgrown. At one time, there was a wall and a lookout tower, but it's overgrown as well. Between this and the atomic bomb drop at Mars Bluff, Florence has done a pretty lousy job of... More

A solemn moment in the history of the war between the states that deserves better care. The state and the US government need to fund an extensive preservation of this site. The death of so many union soldiers and the ages of confederate soldiers guarding the stockade showing the desperation of the southern cause.

Wish there was more reconstruction at the site. The pictures and text at the gazebo are very interesting. There were no brochures at the site, but I was able to get one at the Florence Visitor's Bureau near my Residence Inn. The brochure has text to correspond with the numbered stakes at the actual site. I would strongly suggest stopping... More
