I've known the Hampton-Preston house, it's history & the story of the Hampton -Preston family(s) for 30 years, but had never been to Columbia, so all my knowledge was from books. Because of Hurricane Matthew, I evacuated up to Columbia from my home in Charleston & was finally able to visit this beautiful site. I could have stayed for hours... More

If there is only one Southern mansion you ever visit I recommend this one as a model of the urban type. The History of the Prestons will attract the history buff as well as the romantic. I recommend Mary Boykin Chestnut's Civil War diary as an excellent first hand account of this family

The house has been restored with reproduction and a few original pieces. The guide's narrative was detailed. The grounds are well kept.

The guide from Historic Columbia did a wonderful job with the historical information and presentation. The gardens are beautiful. The magnolias were still in bloom as were the day lilies and other flowers. The preservation work is ongoing in the gardens which will be even grander when complete. The house was filled with artifacts and furnishings of the period. The... More

I recommend a stop at this historic mansion if you are passing through Columbia. The guide was friendly and knowledgable and she made the visit very interesting. I learned more about the local area and the city's involvement in the Civil War. Very good stop.

This was a casual walking tour and they take you inside the houses. It is also connected with the Robert Mills House and Gardens tour. Good for a nice day to walk outdoors. We were lucky to do so as most of the trip it had been rainy. This is a historic area so you can actually drive around and... More

Well done verbal history. Unfortunately most of the history inside this house was lost during the Civil war. Very nice just do not expect to see a historical home that wad frozen in time and perfectly preserved.

Erin provided an insightful and informative tour of this pre civil war home. It's piqued my interest to learn more about the families and the Urban life style of the era. Good job.

We stopped here thinking this would be a beautiful home. It was okay, some of the pieces were nice and the history was interesting but it got boring pretty fast.
