Mother Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun Street in Charleston is a beautiful and historic church that embodies the spirit of Charleston and does much in the community. The church is warm and welcoming and I have had a really good experience every time I have been here for a service or an event. Everyone here is very nice and makes you feel good. They are well worth a visit.

Was in Charleston last week on vacation and knew we had to stop by Emanuel AME to pay respects. We stood out front, along with other visitors, with our heads down in silence. This was a Friday so I was not sure if the church was opened to the public or not. I figured it was not. My significant other walks out back and chats w a few of the local men who where there overseeing some construction of the church. Very friendly men who have been longtime members of the church. They said to come back for Sunday service but we couldn't do to traveling home on Saturday. The one man did indeed take us in to show us around. All I wanted to see was the sanctuary, however, he took us in through the basement which stopped me fast in my tracks. To say it was eerie is putting it lightly. I cannot even begin to describe the feeling of standing in that basement where nine lives were taken just a mere 4 months ago. It was very emotional. Only with Gods love and healing, can those people continue to use that fellowship hall. I believe I read an article where Dr. Goff was asked, "what is the hardest thing about being here right now?" and his response was, "the freshness of death". I get that. Because that is the feeling I had when there.
We did go upstairs then to the beautiful sanctuary and spent a good amount of time looking around and sitting with the nice man who told us many interesting facts about the church and about Charleston. The church was empty, it was quiet, and so it was a good time to sit and reflect and think about all the history this church has seen and how it is currently dealing. Some members, we were told, cannot step foot back in the church as it is just too hard for them.
I pray for all the victims and their families. This visit has really stuck with me. Hard to get some of the mental imagery out of my head. But as our new friend from the church told us, "we are getting through this with a lot of prayer and a lot of laughter". Think about the good times.

This church stands in silent tribute to the faith and grace shown by its members in the aftermath of the heartbreaking violence that was perpetrated on them in 2015. They did not lash out in anger or seek revenge but responded with love and forgiveness, a remarkable example of living by Christian principles that even nonbelievers have to respect and admire. The church itself has a long and storied history that dates back well before the civil rights movement of the '60s, and it was a rock when tragedy struck. Now the front of the church is still festooned with flowers, ribbons and handwritten messages from visitors who come to pay their respects. This is a must-see for all visitors to Charleston.

We were in Charleston a week after the shootings during a prayer service of nine African Americans. There were many people who came by the church to leave flowers, notes, etc. on the sidewalk on the street. It was a peaceful demonstration of support. Later in the day, Charleston residents turned out en masse at the Ravenel Bridge to show their support of those who died at the hands of a young white supremacist. It was overwhelming to see how many people came together - young and old, black and white. This was an emotional experience.

Mother Emanuel Church was the scene of a terrible tragedy, but is a place of hope and peace. The church is so beautiful. People visit to pray in front of the gates. They leave flowers and other items to show support. I can't pass by without thinking about the families of the victims. I know that they are slowly moving on without their family member. This is a place that everyone should visit during a stay in Charleston just to see the resilience of the people who have withstood a horrible act and forgave the person who committed it.

Enjoyed a friendly Sunday service in March 2017. Music was inspiring with abundant vocals and brass and huge energy. Congregation was friendly, and visitors sat in the middle area of pews and were serenaded in a welcoming song by members early in the service. Sermon was energetic to say the least, and we thought the pastor might hyper-ventilate! A warm and moving spiritual experience.

We created our own walking tour that took us by this church. Don't miss the park and memorial plaque just across the street from the church that pay tribute to the victims of the Charleston church shootings.

This is still a beautiful place to visit. There are still memorials on the front ironwork. My husband had not been here since the tragedy. This is such a solemn reminder of the hatred that still exist in our nation, but the forgiveness that also exist in the hearts of good people. Every time I see this church it reminds me of the goodness that can come from such a horrible night. You really need to see this when you are in Charleston and you will feel the love. This will always be an amazing place.

could not keep from getting quite emotional on our visit. The quiet dignity and beauty of this church is in sharp contrast of the evil acts that took place her. The very touching sign outside thanking people for their acts of kindness and the flowers outside also contribute to the dignity of this place.....

I was living in the area when the tragedy happened. Our community came together more so than any other in this great nation. Many loud voices tried to divide and push their agendas on us, but we resisted. We forgave, and loved one another. We came together. We did not burn our city and destroy businesses. Instead we heald hands, sang and prayed together. This is a gorgeous church inside and out. God be with us all!

What time is service on Sunday? I
