Experience the sounds that define Charleston's musical history...from gospel to Gershwin. Each weekly live concert features music of the Civil War; light classics of the venerable St. Cecelia Society; the music of George Gershwin, who wrote "Porgy & Bess" during a summer in Charleston; gospel spirituals sung by slaves as they passed through the port of Charleston; and "Amazing Grace", the words of which were inspired in the composer, John Newton, while he worshipped in our host venue, Circular Congregational Church. Frommers Travel Guide says, "the best night out in Charleston...a must see performance. Visit our website or call the box office for concert dates and ticket information.

Thanks for your positive review. I am wondering, however, why you gave us only one star out of five. Perhaps you reversed the rating scale? More

This show takes on the significant challenge of presenting the long music history of Charleston. The very enthusiastic and talented narration and quality of music presented make for a very enjoyable evening. An excellent variety of music is presented. First time visitors and long time residents of Charleston will appreciate learning about this city's cultural history and music. I left... More

This event was presented as if it would offer all sorts of variety of music, including Gullah. We had two Gospel songs and a wonderful dual piano version of Gershwin's tune from Porgy and Bess. The rest was 2 men (as pictured) singing some local songs. We felt shortchanged as the presentation left us to expect much more.

Thanks for your feedback. I am sorry you were disappointed with the performance. You obviously were then not part of the two standing ovations and cheering crowd at the end of the show. I must, however, correct several inaccuracies in your review. We do promise a variety of music of and that is what we delivered...light classics, gospel, Gershwin, and... More

Locals and visitors alike, if you haven't experienced Sound of Charleston, you are missing out. Superb and moving performances from all of the artists. I am a local who attended for the first time. It won't be my last.

A little sad I had not gone before yesterday because this is a show worth seeing again and again. Each of the five performers were very talented and entertaining. From a thrilling 4-handed rendition of RHAPSODY IN BLUE to wonderful old spirituals and more, this was a perfect night out in historic Charleston.

I'm a local who never got around to doing this until I had visitors. So glad I did! This is a great thing to do for a different experience in our city. A little history and a lot of talent in a 75 min program. Highlight: finest performance of Rhapsody in Blue I have ever heard. Pianist moved me to... More

We made the only show in January – – but the performance was still very refined it and entertaining. All the performances were superb. The highlights, of course, were the spirituals and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. The finale of Amazing Grace triggered chills down our spines. A great complement to a Charleston visit.

If you want to learn about the history of Charleston combined with the talents of music....this is your place. It's a 1 hour 15 min. show in the Circular Congregational Church located off of King Street. It's a small church and the acoustics for the music was wonderful. The talent was quite impressive. They have this show year round.....buy your... More
