Magnolia Cemetery is perhaps best known as the final resting place of the two CSS Hunley crews. However, many of the other gravesites present both historical and unique markers of interest. Of particular note is the memorial to Lieutenant Colonel William Washington. A distant cousin of George Washington, the colonel was an American cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War. His... Oozing with history, from civil war heroes to the Hunley submarine crews, to notable historic figures. The scenery of the grounds I find particularly stunning, ancient oaks, dripping with Spanish moss, a lake with alligators, lots of greenery.

We really enjoyed the flowers and grounds here. Got there in early Spring and everyone was nice and the weather was great.

A Civil War lover, this is a must. Many Confederate graves & tombstones. However the MUST see are the graves of all crew members of the h.l. hunley. Finally at rest, their marked tombstones readily evoke thoughts of their courage. To touch their marker connects you to them & honors their sacrifice.

The bodies of the crew of the Hunley, Confederate soldiers and many others buried here. We were here on a rain day, so we drove slowly through, but it was worth a stop.

We stopped by here after visiting the Hunley museum to see where the crews of the H.L. Hunely are buried. It’s in a remote place in Charleston, and a little difficult to find. The crews are buried near the back of the cemetery and were a challenge to locate as there weren’t signs pointing us there until we were close.... More

I am a photographer so I am always looking for unique and beautiful places! This is by far one of my favorite places to visit. Such beautiful scenery and an interesting place all the way around. I went alone while my husband rested and I wont lie - I got a little freaked out and it was broad daylight. I... More

We traveled to see this old Historical Magnolia Cemetery to find the final resting place of the three crews that died in the confederate H.L. Hunley civil war submarine. They died on three separate occasions while either training on the sub or on it's only mission when they attacked and sank the USS Housatonic. Their graves are now located in... More

This is not any ordinary cemetery, especially if you take the scary tour at night. Only one problem, its mosquito season so its better to do a drive by and hop out and take some pictures, The monuments to those who died on the Hunley submarine are beautiful.
