The Foundation welcomes visitors to explore daily life in one of Charleston's most exquisite dwellings. Located in Downtown Charleston near High Battery, the Nathaniel Russell House Museum, 51 Meeting Street, is widely recognized as one of America's most important neoclassical dwellings. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the National Historic Landmark in 1955, and the house served as the Foundation's headquarters for 37 years. Today, the interiors are restored to their original 1808 grandeur and surrounded by formal gardens.

The house was amazing. However, the tour was totally boring. I wish we could have had a better tour guide. The lady didn't talk very loud and she talked more about the furniture in the house than the actual house and events that took place there.

As stated in other reviews, a good tour is shepherd by a very good docent. Ours was so boring that we wanted to leave half way through. There was no umph to his voice that would entice you to ask questions.

This is the tour to take if you want to see a late 1700's city home filled with much of the original art and furniture of the original owner. When not the original furniture, actual period pieces have been utilized -- not reproductions. The details (trim/paint/etc) have been restored to original -- quite impressive.

Spent the day touring Charleston on bikes. Stopped at Nathaniel Russell House for a bit of history - perfect addition to the day. Guide was knowledgeable and extremely patient answering even the littlest tourists questions.

During a recent visit to Charleston, my wife and I were interested in touring some historic homes. The Nathaniel Russell House was recommended to us as a worthwhile tour. I did some research online and found that this museum was associated with the Historic Charleston Foundation, and that we could purchase a combined ticket that gave us admission to the... More

I would highly recommend visiting the Nathaniel Russell House. Our tour was amazing with our guide, Bev. She was so enthusiastic and clear as she explained the history of the house and the lifestyle during that time period in Charleston. It was interesting to learn that they are continuing to research the house and keep making new discoveries. Don't miss... More

While spending $12 was ok to see the house, it might has well been a self guided tour. Our tour guide, Joy, was unfortunately boring and painfully ignorant of any historical facts. Although she asked if anybody had questions, she had no answers when anyone did ask questions. Perhaps there are better tour guides, but I wouldn't have paid two... More

This house has been beautifully restored and is a must see. You can easily see that it mst have been one of the most luxurious homes in the country in the early 1800s.

The docent takes you around explaining the history and furnishings of the home which was excellent. The home has been restored to it's natural beauty and the gardens are very nice. Plan on about forty five minutes for the tour.

The house was a great example of life for the wealthy prior to the Civil War. The need for servants to run a house this size was immediately apparent, as was the opulent lifestyles enjoyed by the wealthiest members of society.
