Redcliffe Plantation, completed in 1859, was once the home of James Henry...

Redcliffe Plantation, completed in 1859, was once the home of James Henry Hammond, three generations of his descendants, and numerous African-American families like the Henleys, Goodwins, & Wigfalls who worked at the site as slaves and later free men and women. Redcliffe provides a setting for exploring the experiences of the enslaved, as well as the larger institution of slavery and reflects the historical experiences and impact of the white and black families who lived and worked at the site. The extant slave quarters, mansion, and iconic lane of magnolia trees planted in 1860 serve to highlight the plantation's rich and varied history. House Tours are offered Thursday through Monday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. There are no tours available on Tuesday/Wednesday. If school groups are scheduled on a day tours are offered, the 11am tour will not be held. Please contact the park in advance if you are planning on attending an 11 a.m. tour.

While we were not able to get inside the house, a walk around the outside was very impressive. The house is HUGE! Amazing example of plantation architecture and lucky that the Feds didn't burn it to the ground. Watch out for the massive prickly pear cactus outside - it'll get you!

We visited the plantation and grounds while in Augusta Georgia. We took the plantation tour, and found it not only informational but very fascinating. Out tour guide not only told us the basic facts about the working plantation, but fun stories about the families and slave families that lived there. Her presentation was geared toward the adults in our group... More

This plantation is located on some seriously gorgeous property. You can wander around the property to see the outside of the house, the slaves' residence, the horse barn without paying for a tour of the house, but the tour is very affordable and well worth doing. Check tour times and days - they are on a schedule. I think the... More

We visited this place on a recent tour of SC State Parks. It's not too far off of I-20. It's a very well maintained home for something built before 1865. It was used as a residence into the mid 20th century but doesn't seem to have been allowed to fall into disrepair over time. The site is beautiful although it... More

We are people who go on many historic tours, and I had the privilege of being a docent at an antebellum historic home one summer. Sometime you get outstanding tour guides, and sometimes you don't. But the tour we had at Redcliffe was interesting and intriguing, and even entertaining --- and I believe would be for almost anyone fortunate enough... More

Thank you for so eloquently describing your experiences at Redcliffe Plantation. We are fortunate to have passionate, interested, and skilled professionals to tell the stories of the enslaved individuals and the members of the Hammond family. Elizabeth is one of a team of historians trained to use the available primary sources to address a complex time period. Our hope is... More

Our guide, Officer Elizabeth, was a great storyteller and clearly knew her history and enjoyed sharing it. She was especially attentive to the younger members of our tour. I'd highly recommend making this stop. I now have a new mission as a new resident of SC... to visit all 42 state parks!!

This hidden property is beautiful. The tour guide, Elizabeth, is knowledgeable and animated which made for an informative and fun experience. The tour lasts a little under an hour and then gives an opportunity to explore additional places on the property at your own pace. We can't wait to go on the "behind the scenes" tour, which includes the attic... More

The family that owned the plantation kept amazing journals and our tour guide, Elizabeth Laney, has been reading the documentation and brought so many different aspects to our tour. The pine floors and sycamore mantels and doors spoke vividly of the past. Thee house is in excellent repair and the furnishings are from many different generations. Well worth the trip!
