We were trying to find a cozy and quiet little beach town where we could take the kids after 3 busy days in NYC before going back up north. What a pleasant surprise!
The beach is quiet. The sand is granular. There’s a lifeguard on duty until 5PM. Very, very quiet. For a few hours more than the ice cold beaches in MA, here you actually can spend 30 minutes in the ocean in late June without worrying of “shrinkage” or freezing.
We did not find much information about this area in RI on the Internet. Yet, we were pleasantly surprised by the laid back atmosphere and relative lack of the usual popular coastal resort amenities (ex.pier, motels, etc.). There’s a nice local ice cream parlour, a minimart, 2/3 local pubs/restaurants and a laundromat. That’s pretty much it on this side of the sound.
A lot of action seems to be around the local RV park, but everything seems quiet and relax.
Nice place to discover off the beaten paths.

We spent a great week at the Admiral Dewey Inn, across the street from this beach. The beach is over a mile long and not crowded. Wonderful waves to swim in or use surf boards -- and you see Block Island off in the distance. Some days there is kelp, but if you walk along the beach toward the west there is less kelp and you are almost alone on the beach. Excellent life guards, showers and rest rooms, but no food stand at this beach. There are few shells at this beach, and you might want rock shoes because there are smooth rocks in among the sandy stretches. If you come by car, there's plenty of parking but the cost is about $25 per day per car.

If the Inn I was staying at had not told me about this relaxing, just big enough beach with plenty of parking, I would have missed it. Then I would have gone into a traffic jam, with hard to find parking, and been harried and less able to enjoy the beach, water, atmosphere.

The beach alone is lovely, plus grassy areas and small children's playground, flowers, nice walkways and viewing areas for handicapped and everyone's enjoyment.

Parking is on the grass with rows in between the hedges. Sand is not powdery, but rather course. Beach is a bit rocky - water shoes may be helpful. There is NO food served at this beach, though there are bathrooms open during regular hours.
Parking $ 20 nonresidents.

This beach used to be fantastic. Very low key, not crowded, locals, great picnic area, fun boogie boarding. Now, it is overrun on weekends by folks who do not care for it as others have in the past. The dog situation is OUT OF CONTROL. Dog feces everywhere. Ugh. Much more smoking than years past as well. Perhaps if residents were the majority but many out of staters have ruined this previous gem.

My parents have a summer home so it is very close walk just across the street. It is a little rocky and you don't find many shells on the beach but its also not overcrowded. We go early in the morning and enjoy our coffee before it gets too warm and then go back right before lunch for a quick swim. After that we go back for a walk after dinner once the crowds have calmed down a little. There is a nice grass area for a picnic with tables as well as a bath house. Nice place for a family trip and you can park at the Carpenter Beach Lot down the road on the left for just $5.00.

The beach is disappointing and it is embarrassing to change a very high parking fee when you see garbage cans which are infrequently emptied and cans and bottles littering the beach areas. The town needs to take some of the money generated and spend it maintaining the beach!

Primarily a residents' beach (seasonal pass), but many rentals in the area may provide options. $$ parking. The town makes annual efforts to combat erosion. Nice bath facilities. No food - BYOF.
