First and Second Beach get very busy this time of year and they both get a good amount of red seaweed. But Third beach is off the beaten path and, I think, becasue it is on teh other side it gets much less red seaweed or none at all. I think this is worth the drive. BTW: From my hotel we can walk to First Beach and yet we still travel to Third Beach and pay for parking.

We tried out the rentals for paddleboards and kayaks this year and it was a big hit so we went out to OSJL and bought our own. From 4 years old to 60+ got to enjoy them on third beach. The calm beach has lots of shells and sea glass.

It's a bay so there's no 🌊 waves. People bring their kayaks and stand up paddle boards there. There's also a boat launch.
They have 2 outdoor portable restrooms, but zero trash cans anywhere. So be prepared to take your garbage back home.
The water seems kind of dirty to me. It also had a lot of rocks/pebbles on the shore that you have to walk across to get in the water. Wear Beach shoes. Also, there's a charge for parking. Locals can buy a sticker. I saw on the holidays they were charging up to $30.00 per day. I think that's outrageous. Maybe they can buy some trash cans.
It's a good place for small kids since there are no waves or strong currents to worry about.

Third beach is known as the "Family Beach". Sheltered from winds and high surf, it's located on the Sakonnet River, separated from Second Beach by Sachuest Point Nature Reserve. The atmosphere tends to be more chill than the larger beaches, and is rightly considered to be safer for children

Third beach can be a great place to walk dogs, stand up paddle or grab a mooring...but sometimes boats empty their holding tanks 🙊😬
This week, Newport harbor water has been cleaner than third beach

As a local, I find this beach to be my favorite for its quiet location, and clean sand.
I like to walk along the shore in the late afternoon when the beach is mostly deserted.
Due to its calm water, it's favored by those w/small children and far less crowded than nearby First and Second beaches.

This was a pleasant surpass, as I found it while driving back from a bird sanctuary. It is a small quiet beach, located next to a wild life refuge. Next time I will bring a bicycle so that I can cycle through the refuge and end at the beach.

Not good for small children, the surf was rough when we were there in March, maybe it calms down in summer, but what a beautiful long beach!

Agree with many of the other posters. This is the best beach we have found for small children in Newport. We are just back from our 3rd summer vacation and the beach seemed especially clean this year. I am not sure if they combed it every night or if we were just lucky but it was spotless. Kids are able to play in very clam water and never have a problem sitting close enough to keep an eye on them while still relaxing a bit. We've gone on the weekend in the past and it can get a bit crowded but on this trip we were there Monday, Tuesday, Friday and it was very was wide open.
Dells lemonade and snacks from lunchtime on. Portable toilets served their purpose.
Would be great if they one day built a more permanent facility at this beach.

To attend my class, park in the small lot half way along the beach. you will see my sign in the dunes
