About
Blithewold, named in Yankee Magazine's 2010 Best 5 Public Gardens in New England is located on Narragansett Bay, 25 minutes east of Providence and 60 minutes south of Boston. Blithewold, a 33-acre summer estate with grand views of Narragansett Bay, is nationally significant in American history as one of the most fully developed and authentic examples of the Country Place era. The property features a 45-room mansion filled with family heirlooms framed by a series of lovely gardens that range in character from mysterious to exotic and from poetic to practical. An exceptional collection of rare and unusual plants, specimen trees, an accessible greenhouse, and whimsical stonework project a character that is romantic, fresh and inspiring - and unique to Blithewold. Come...and be inspired.

We enjoyed our time here. The grounds and home are beautiful. The staff is very friendly. We did the tea and scones on the porch and that was very worth it!

A wonderland. The gardens and house are exquisite. We usually go several times a year. A Christmas time visit is highly recommended.

The recent dry spell has taken its toll on the gardens on the property. Credit to the groundskeepers for keeping the experience memorable.

I look forward to a return trip when we get more rain.

Lovely gardens on the water, was the perfect location for an outdoor wedding and reception. Appreciated the additional restrooms adjacent to the venue tent so guests did not have to walk to the main house.

Walking the gardens was really fun - there are benches in the various gardens when you can sit and there are areas where you can really enjoy the sea breeze on a hot day. Highlights include multiple hydrangeas, a giant sequoia tree, a mini bamboo forest. Do bring bug spray with you as there are mosquitos about.

Blithewold has long been on my bucket list and it did not disappoint. The house is beautiful! The gardens are truly a delight in themselves. The beautiful lawn meanders down to the sea and the view from the porches and patio leave one wanting more of this beautiful place by the sea. The docent was wonderful. Her welcoming speech was both educational and interesting. I was especially impressed as watched her interact with young children who otherwise may have been bored with their visit.

Blithewold is absolutely gorgeous -- mansion, extensive and varied gardens, magnificent trees, and ten-acre lawn running down to the broad bay. The place is beautifully maintained -- house and arboretum both. I had read about Blithewold long ago, and visiting was not a let-down. The two docents whom we spoke to were friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. We were free to wander the exquisite but comfortable (and yes, large) house with its original furnishings at will. If I lived nearby, I'd try to get there very often.

Blithewold is one of my most favorite places ever. I try to visit every year, as the gardens are truly the most inspiring to me and absolutely lovely. They have many different gardens located throughout the property and all is located on the coastal Bristol Harbor, so in addition to all of the beautiful gardens, you have beautiful waterfront views.

They have a cute gift shop and you can choose to visit the Home & Gardens or just Gardens. It is a beautiful place for a picnic or to draw/paint. I just love to walk the grounds and take in the breath taking views.

Save at least 2 hours to totally enjoy this property. It is a great mix of local history and beautiful landscape!! Water views, exotic plants and trees! Walk through a bamboo patch and experience the sights, smells and sounds. We plan to go back to experience a different season.
Oh, and do the free audio tour! I really felt what it was like to experience the late 1800”s / early 1900”s with the amazing Van Winkle family!!

We spend a lovely couple hours at the property! We watched the introductory video on the property as well as the artist that is displaying his work (birds with acorn creatures).

There are lots of flowers and foliage around the property along with the gardens/greenhouse which has a path to take you to Narragansett Bay.

The mansion is beautiful and have nice narrative that you can read or listen to from QR codes.

We plan to return when it is decked out for Christmas!!
