About
Situated in the heart of Oakland, Schenley Park has come to be Pittsburgh’s civic park. Created in 1889 with land donated by heiress Mary Schenley, the park now contains 456 acres of trails, woods, and attractions. A daily destination for university students, business-people, and outdoor enthusiasts, the park also hosts major annual events such as the Vintage Grand Prix and the Pittsburgh Race for the Cure. Visitors to Schenley Park can spend a morning at the remarkable Phipps Conservatory, enjoy lunch and a concert at the Schenley Park Cafe and Visitor Center, relax on Flagstaff Hill, play a round at the Bob O’Connor Golf Course, head to the Schenley Oval Sportsplex for ice skating or summer sports, or take a dip in the swimming pool. And of course, the trails offer a refreshing and convenient escape from the city. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy restored the Schenley Park Cafe and Visitor Center in 2001 and operates the space today with event and culinary partners, Eat'n Park Hospitality Group. In 2005, the Parks Conservancy worked with City of Pittsburgh crews to rehabilitate the Phipps Run stream channel that stretches from behind the Visitor Center down to Panther Hollow Lake. Restoration of the Panther Hollow Watershed is continuous, with the ultimate goal of restoring Panther Hollow Lake to a water quality that will once again allow for recreational use.

My wife and I took a one-hour bike ride throughout Schenley Park, enjoying the dirt bike paths that climbed to the top of this green oasis. This park features mixed-use pedestrian and bike paths as well as a grassy area atop the park with public tennis courts, an oval-shaped track, lacrosse and soccer fields, plus a public bathroom at the top of the park. The only negative in visiting Schenley Park is the road noise from an adjacent highway and bridge, but it is worth a visit to exercise and cool off under the green trees that form a canopy in many areas of the path. We even saw several deer. An ideal way to tour this park is via Pittsburgh’s bike or electric bike rental stations starting and ending in Oakland.

Since we could not get tickets for Conservatory we went to the park for a walk. What a pleasant surprise.

There were many options to choose for a walking path. We began just wending our way down and then took a steeper route. The path at the bottom had many small bridges.

We walked to the pond which was quite large.

The people we passed were all friendly.

We have already recommended the park to others.

We wanted to look at the signature statue and pond and there was nowhere to park without paying a fee. Likewise when we wanted to explore a trail. Nice park but not user friendly in this way. I'm sure the locals know where to park but out of towners are burned.

A wonderful place to walk for 2-3 hours on a nice day. It's bigger and more varied than most people realize, and as much a local treasure as Central Park is for New Yorkers. Plus, you can easily combine it with a 2-hour visit to the nearby Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens for a day full of nature.

This is really an all day excursion if you want to do it right. We rode our bikes, but it was very hilly and the trails are confusing. You definitely want to have a map. There's a golf course, the botanical gardens, playgrounds, bridges, lakes, forests, and Carnegie Melon University is right next door. But be prepared to do some climbing and sometimes the busy roads can be a bit disconcerting. All in all, this is a place to spend a good bit of time exploring all the hidden gems. The park is serviced by the city bus line so that might be your best bet getting there because it's located out of the town and it's too far to walk to.

Schneley Park is a great place to walk around! There are great jogging and walking trails that are both paved and unpaved. If you prefer trail runs, this is a great place (so is Frick Park!). Strollers are easy to use at Schenley Park.
