We booked a deluxe whitewater rafting trip on the Lower Yough. Isaiah, our guide, did a great job of connecting with the entire family, including the kids. He shared his knowledge of not only the river but also of the wildlife and it’s surroundings. He took time to share stories, listen to our children’s stories and make everyone feel important. There was a lot of laughing and we did not get stuck once on a low river. Very impressive! His customer service was outstanding! We highly recommend Wilderness Voyageurs and are looking forward to returning in the future.

This was my first guided group cycling adventure and I can’t say enough good things about the 6 day Michigan Islands, Trails, & Dunes Bicycle Tour. The guides (‘Team Dave’) were helpful, informative, friendly, humorous, and worked extremely well together and always in sync. They made sure everyone was comfortable and that the bikes were in good working order. They were always smiling and upbeat and provided plenty of support stops each day. The lodging was excellent and the included meals were healthy with plenty of choices for every taste. I especially loved the rotisserie chicken to be used in a choice of salads and/or sandwiches. The tour offered the perfect mix of group and on-our-own meals. Mackinac Island is a gem of a bygone era, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is spectacular. Petoskey, along the shores of Traverse Bay, offers gorgeous sunsets by the pier. I loved the little towns we cycled through, especially the vacation cottages and homes along Crystal Lake to Beulah on Day 6. We flew into Traverse City and I recommend staying an extra day to experience all this town has to offer – antique shops, ice cream, great restaurants, lakeside parks, famers’ market, and shops. The Michigan weather in August was perfect with 80F degree days & 60F degree evenings. Again, kudos to Wilderness Voyageurs and ‘Team Dave’ for a delightful cycling vacation.

Wilderness Voyageurs 4 day Great Allegheny Passage Bike Tour
Myself and 3 friends booked the GAP tour in 2020 and it was cancelled due to COVID to 2021. The customer service was outstanding before the ride whether using the 800 number or email, responses were timely and addressed any concerns we had. We rebooked our trip for 2021 and prior to the trip received frequent information by email about the upcoming tour. I needed a change in my rental bike a week prior and they brought an additional bike on the Van/Trailer with them so I could try it out! Pat helped with adjusting the bike adding my seat and pedals. I also received a call from Lea one of the tour guides and asked for a way to celebrate one of our friends birthdays and she contacted Lenoras Inn to arrange for a special dessert with a candle. That is what I knew about the arrangement but when we were picked up at Homestead ALL of the other riders who joined us who were in the van had Birthday Party hats on that Lea had thoughtful provided. It was those little details that continued during our trip to make it incredibly memorable.
Lea and Pat were not only the guides for the trail of which they had incredible knowledge of the area and prepared healthy great tasting sandwiches and salads every day on the trail at our lunch stop and were the photographers for some great group shots at the iconic areas along the trail. They loaded and unloaded our bags on and off the Van and locked up and inspected and repaired any issues related to bikes whether rented or if you brought your own. There was a briefing every morning with a whiteboard full of details of where to stop for FABULOUS photo ops and scenic views. We set out every day on the trail with ride with GPS with directions on our phones or printed turn by turn directions that was provided in advance, and either Lea or Pat would ride sweep to assure all the riders were on track for the next stop. There were 2-3 stops for snacks or lunch every day where the van/trailer would need us.
Dinners at the Inns were coordinated so the group could sit together and this facilitated the group bonding with everyone including Pat and Lea. We sat on many of the Inns porches and shared jokes, stories and also helped each other on the trail by taking photos, rating the porta potties and calling out if someone overshot a good stop.
The dinners at the Inns were restaurant quality even if prepared by the owner.
Lenora the Chef and owner of Lenoras Inn prepared crab cakes which were better than any 4 star restaurant! A fabulous full Breakfast was served on the porch the following morning.
I researched this trip thoroughly and chose it based on the reviews but my entire group agreed this exceeded any expectations we had because of the outstanding customer service and attention to detail that made the experience memorable and unforgettable.

July 8 Kayaking down the Lower Yough.
Positives: Parking was easy and our vehicle felt safe at the location. Safety briefing was helpful. The guides were always close by, getting our family of 5 Kayakers (2 parents and 3 grown children) through the rapids. We enjoyed the rapids and it was a beautiful day to be on the water. "Lunch" was appreciated. The kayaks and equipment were in good shape.

There were several things that could have made the day so much better.
1. Let us keep our original earlier time, or
2. Start on time
3. Don't mix kayakers and rafters on a low river
4. Give a realistic trip time. 6 hours on the water in a kayak is too much time, especially if most of it is spent sitting and waiting.
So what happened: We had a 3 hour drive home so we intentionally booked a 12:00 slot (anticipating 4-5 hour river trip). We upgraded to kayaks to better navigate the lower water levels. Our time was changed to 1:00 with no alternative options given. We thought this was still manageable and expected to be done NLT 6pm. When we got there at 1, we found out that we were in a mixed group of kayaks and rafts. The orientation did not even start until after 1:30, then we traveled to the starting point and had a much apprecitated safety briefing (after waiting an additional 15 min for a guide that was siginificantly late. We did not get on the water until well after 2. This would have been fine, except for being paired with rafts that constantly got stuck at every rapid. Most of the kayaks got throught the rapids with minimal problems, so we spent a great deal of time waiting for the rafts. We finished the route close to 8pm.
All 5 of us really did like the first half of the experience, but we were very tired by the 6th hour of being on the water, waiting for these rafters to get unstuck every few minutes. It was an exhausting and very late drive home.
If we were to come back, we would definitely need to be in an all kayak group or with much higher water. I would recommend it to friends, but would give them a heads up of the concerns listed above.

My husband I just returned from the Michigan Islands and Dunes tour using our e-bikes. I don’t know what the best part of this trip was : the scenery was breathtaking, the gps navigated us successfully through small and large towns, on country roads and on the trails. Our guides, Angelo and Heather were so attentive to our needs, loading our luggage and bikes on the SAG, detailing the daily itinerary on “the board” , laying out nutritious snacks and lunches on the trail, the weather was perfect - it was fantastic. With all that said, we had a wonderful group of people who just “gelled” from day one! We are still texting each other! I would add that this was our third WV cycling trip - I could have written the same review for the other two WV adventures. All of our guides have been 5 star, leaving us wanting for more! ( which we ARE planning)

The 4 day GAP was my first multi-day bike trip and it left me wanting to take more! Josh, Jason, and trainee Rob were the guides for twelve of us bikers, and they carefully looked out for our safety and comfort, providing us with a delicious lunch on the trail each day and beverage and snack breaks mid morning and mid afternoon.

When the second day of our trip threatened thunderstorms along with actual nonstop rain, a couple additional tourist stops (Fort Necessity and Kentuck Knob) were added to our planned stop at Fallingwater so we had an educational day off of the bikes. We made up for it on day three when we were enabled to ride the five most beautiful miles of day two plus the 41 scheduled for day three. Knowing that he had riders of a large range of ages and fitness levels (from 35-74 years), Josh offered an option to skip eight of the third day’s miles but everyone was having such a great time that no one took it.

All of the inns at which we stayed were very comfortable, and the food was hearty and delicious.

The Ride with GPS was great and it worked with one’s phone in airplane mode with the screen off, giving audible cues regarding the trail. In addition, the guides presented a white board they prepared in advance of each day’s ride with all the significant markers and breaks.

Our guides went above and beyond—retrieving a pair of glasses left behind in Ohiopyle early in the trip and, on the last day, at the completion of our journey, shuttling guests to a car rental company and others to a post trip AirB&B in Cumberland before taking those of us who drove back to our cars in Ohiopyle.

The scenery was lovely and the gradual uphill gradient was doable. As the oldest member of our group of riders on my own, person-powered bike, I had doubts about my own ability to complete the ride, but I did it! And I had fun!

We rented a raft for “family rafting” on the Middle Yough on August 11 with 6 people, including two fit senior citizens and a 7 year old and 10 year old. After riding the bus all the way to the launch point, the guides then inform us that the water level is “extremely low” and that we will likely get stuck on rocks and gave us tips for how to extricate ourselves. Get stuck on rocks did we ever! We spent at least 30% of the 6-hour trip pushing and dragging our boat through rock beds and even had to bail to shore at one point, our whole group stumbling through rough water and slimy rocks on hands and feet, to carry the boat on land to get around a whole area where we were just stuck. I’m amazed no one was injured. Upon finally making it to the end we heard the water was at the lowest point so far this summer (1.27 feet!) when it averages closer to 2.5. Then they decided to cancel the rest of the trips for the week. While we would have been bummed of course to arrive in Ohiopyle and have our rafting cancelled, the experience was not fun and of course not worth the $177 we paid for our group. It should have been cancelled as soon as they knew the water was that low. Buyer beware.

I've done 30 bike tours (16 if you ignore RAGBRAI). Companies used were Backroads, America by Bicycle, Crossroads (under two different owners), Timberline, Cycle for Life & one in France whose name escapes me. WV ranked in the middle.

Positives: Good logistical support, attention to safety & hygiene, very good "chief guide," ample high quality restaurant food variety/amount. Also, good customer service in the lead up to the ride.

Negatives: Bad rental bike (mediocre shifting, inadequate brakes, very heavy bike with tires too wide and knobby for most of the terrain), some "meh" accommodations (not their fault as options limited in some towns) and a very marginal "junior" guide. Though very nice and helpful with logistics she didn't seem to know or impart knowledge of what we were looking at. An example would be on Mackinac Island bringing the group in front of the fort and Grand Hotel, waiting until everyone assembled and then pushing on w/o any description or background on what we were seeing. On one occasion she was with a group which was forced off course by a funeral and didn't give good instructions on the work-around letting us pedal well past the turnoff before calling our phone instead of leading the us the correct way.
There was a pretty loose morning route rap but no warnings of where the group could easily go wrong as I've seen on virtually every other trip. As a result a number of times people went wrong and put in extra (though scenic) miles.

GAP bike tour, a marvelous and finely curated 4 day bike excursion. The operator has been doing this trip awhile and their expertise and experience shows. Well planned and executed with great value for the cost. I’ve been on bike trips costing twice as much with not nearly the experience and fun this trip provided.

This was a wonderful introduction to New Mexico. The scenery was magnificent, both natural and manmade. Our accommodations were great. The food was delicious. My rental bike worked out perfectly with my own pedals and seat. The itinerary was full, including the tours and stops at various spots. Our guides worked to keep everybody well-supported throughout the trip. (This included changing 8 flat tires at our lunch stop on the first day and 4 more overnight.)
I would have enjoyed the trip even more, if it had been considerably cooler - maybe at a different time of year? Given the heat, perhaps we could have taken off earlier more mornings and had shorter lunch stops. Tweaking restaurant recommendations to reflect closures on certain days would have been helpful in Taos.
I would recommend that people stay at least an extra two days in Santa Fe, to enjoy seeing more of the sights there. This trip definitely left me wanting to return to New Mexico!!
