We hiked the trail to the observation tower with my family and we had such a great time. We climbed to the top and you are rewarded with some great views. Highly recommend if your in the area!

Good hike for anyone wanting to get high on the mountain and see the tower at the top. It is a good hike, coming down is far easier.

It was a nice relaxing hike in the woods to the tower. The trail we took was covered in stone. My family climbed the tower which was a series of ladders and platforms to the top where you can look out.

Gov. Dick is a peaceful hike through trails that lead you to the 60 foot high tower. You climb the tower on multiple stages of the efficient and easy ladder system. Fantastic 360-degree view from the top of the tower

Okay, this area ia NOT named after a governor, and the slave it is named after was lovingly called Dick. This gentleman worked in the woods in the late 1700's, and he was fondly called "Governor" because of the huge amount of charcoal he produced.
Anyway, the wonderful park is an historical landmark with a great history. There's something for just about everyone, if you're into the environment: information on the geology of the area, the vegetation of the area, and the animal life of the area. For all of you walkers, bikers, or horseback riders, there are more than fifteen miles of trails. It's a wonderful way to spend some time just looking around within the displays in the building, or going for a quiet hike or ride. If you're visiting the area, you should make this one of your stops.

I've been riding on these lands for years. It's beautiful and such a treasured resource for local equestrians!

Govenor Dick Park is a quiet retreat with a good range of opportunities for hiking, birding and has a nature center, which provides an excellent overview of both the history and flora and fauna of the area.
Hiking is easy to mid range. Maps for hiking trails are excellent and staff are always very helpful. The primary pathway hike to the tower is about 1-1.5 miles and generally easy. The tower can be climbed via internal ladders. The nature center is accessible to all persons.

My wife and I decided to take a day trip to Mt Gretna and see Governor Dick Park and climb the tower. We first stopped at the park office to get a map and get oriented. There is a nice modern building with plenty of nature displays inside. The park attendant was helpful with the direction to the tower. You can park at the visitor center and hike from there. The trail is wide and well marked, however it is steep and has loose gravel.
Once we got to the tower it is a series of 8 foot ladders to get to the top. There are actually 2 sets of ladders inside the tower, one to go up and one to get down. Each ladder stopping at a platform for rest. Approximately 8 ladders to the top.the top is completely enclosed by a set of bars.It offers views of the surrounding countryside. No handicap access. Teens OK but not recommended for young children to climb.

The observatory is only a short ways from the main parking lot. There are several short ladders with mini platforms after each so if you're afraid of heights, it's not for you. Also, it's very narrow so those with long legs have to go sideways otherwise you keep banging your knee, Make sure you bring bugspray, tons of bugs swarming around your sweaty face (that's expected). I used the red trail to get there and then looped around. Prior to the observatory, there's a beautiful flower area with tons of butterflies, really peaceful and quiet.
