The only time I've visited Wheatland was when it's decorated for Christmas, and the tour is holiday-centric. The mansion was gorgeous with all the Christmas decorations and several trees. The actors did a commendable job portraying the time period.

Learned alot about James Buchanan our 15th president of the United States & only president to come from the state of Pennsylvania. Alot of the rooms inside the house had original furnishings, rugs, wallpaper as well as replicas to represent what was there at that time period.

We enjoyed a thorough tour of Buchanan's home, Wheatland. The tour guide, dressed in historical garb, gave many details of each room and was enthusiastic about her subject. I asked for information about Buchanan and why he is regarded as the worst president ever. She gave good but brief answers. The tour center did not seem to have history of... More

Thank you for visiting President Buchanan’s historic home, Wheatland. We are pleased to learn that you enjoyed your tour. The museum’s volunteer tour guides are trained to pack a lot of information into a brief 50 minute tour. Unfortunately this time constraint often prevents our guides from providing much more than good brief answer about a complex topics, such as... More

We finally visited Wheatland after planning to do so for a long time. First the movie and museum were really nice. We went at 9:30 so went into the museum after the 10 am house tour. We bought tickets there and not online. Our tour guide was great and dressed in period costume. And since only 2 of us, was... More

I always wanted to visit because Buchanan was our only President from PA and this is his home. We visited in December. The staff wore clothing from the period. They were very knowledgeable about the life and times of James Buchanan. they described the process of becoming President back then; much different than now. They also descr4ibed the history of... We had a lovely tour of the mansion. Our guide told us lots of interesting historical stories about James Buchanan and the house which has many original artifacts. For those of us who need to rest, there are chairs in each room where you may sit. There are chairs where you may not sit, as well. But for someone who... More

The tour guide who took us through the house seemed to know everything about the house and it's former residents. He told us about the residents, the furniture, political life in the mid-1860s and the extended Buchanan family. The guide had lots of stories and anecdotes. Either before or after the tour, take a look through the museum exhibits. There's... More

Buchanan is one of the lesser-known presidents, which is a shame considering the pivotal time he was president - right up to the secession of the south which led to the Civil War. He was also a highly-qualified leader, with terms in the senate, house, and diplomat to Russia and England. Just as interesting are the things we learned about... More
