Didn't have a lot of time but we did have an opportunity to stop at the memorial they have dedicated to Jim Thorpe. Plan ahead if going into town, a lot of the shops were closed when we visited.

Nice statue - not much to say about it. Learned more online than the information there. Seems like it could be quite the story but a missed opportunity

I drove by the memorial. It had two large statues. Very impressive. The major draw for me, was the city of Jim Thorpe, and the quaintness of the city, with the windy streets, going up a hill, and the wonderful architecture. It is clearly very unique. I would have liked to have toured the prison, but it was not open.... More

So considering the history behind the name, the memorial is kinda in a out of the way place. Don't blink, you might miss it. Was raining when we visited, so didn't get out to read the memorials placed in his honor. We googled the history to know what the story was.

A fitting monument to the " World's Greatest Athlete " as the King of Norway proclaimed him. News clippings, various memorabilia of his abilities and achievements. Considering the small population of Jim Thorpe ( formerly Mauch Chunk ) the community did him proud. Last year I believe, the struggle for his remains was settled by the courts. No one wanted... Who was Jim Thorpe and why was he important? Do your kids know who he is? This memorial will open the door to a lot of discussion and a great opportunity to educate yourself and others. It would have been nice to be able to buy a book about his life. Did you know he died pennyless? My kids enjoyed... More

The Jim Thorpe Memorial is a location that everyone should see. The highlight is the Thorpe mausoleum and the statues that commemorate his athletic prowess. The interpretative signs do a great job of telling the story of arguably the best athlete in our country's history. Make the time to pay homage to this American sports hero.

A great tribute to an American sports hero and really shows a great tribute to Jim Thorpe as you enter the town of June Thorpe. It is definitely worth the stop before the drive into town.
