We went to Lord Howe expecting great water-based activities (swimming, snorkelling, sea kayaking, diving) but were very impressed with the network of walking trails. Every day we headed out to explore. Too many for a week, so we'll have to go back and do more. With the island's mild climate the walks were comfortable even in mid summer, and many... More

We are in our 50s and of average fitness, and did two of the more reasonable walks during our stay. Both highly recommended. Be prepared - both walks require good walking shoes, plenty of water and some fruit or snacks to have along the way. I wouldn't attempt either if during or after heavy rain due to the amount of... We left from Ned's Beach , walked up to Malabar Hill, along the ridge to Kim's lookout then across to where the track meets Max Nicholls memorial track where we then followed it down to North Beach. At North Beach we walked along the rock ledge at Old Gulch to swim in the gorgeous rock pools , but you have... More

There are walking trails available throughout the island. Some are easy but others more difficult culminating in the hardest walk of all , the Mt. Gower climb. Tracks are sandy, grassy or pebbly. There is plenty to see along the way with beautiful vistas and bird life.

I managed to walk a number of the trails, which had wonderful views, amazing vegetation, bird life and lots of exercise up hills and down hills. Some trails such as malabar and kyms lookout lead to north beach, very refreshing on a hot day. Others to middle beach. I headed up the goats run but found it a bit challenging... More

No trail is exceptionally long, and with the exception of Mt Gower, all may be walked unaccompanied. Some are closed for the breeding season but there are always plenty of places to walk.

The trails are well marked and maps are available on the island. The walks are graded. The views from the lookouts are great. Mt Gower is the hardest and can only walked with a guide. We did not attempt it!

One of the simpler walks is A Clear Place and middle beach but you might get your host to drop you up the top of middle beach road first. A clear place is a walk past the Valley of the Shadows which is caused by a small forest of ancient fig trees. A clear place is a quiet place to... More
