A lovely old medieval house with a fascinating history nicely explained in the heritage centre. Several rooms are open to visitors

Gift shop and separate room with locally made crafts for sale.

There is a cafe serving very nice cakes - local saffron cake for us this time.

The highlight is the beautiful 17th century garden.

You won't spend a lot of time in here, but it's well worth a visit.

Part of the Liskeard Heritage trail, maps of which are available here.

No admission charge either

Visited little museum, interesting area on our Royal family. Stopped in the quaint cafe below with a beautiful walled garden, well done to the volunteers who maintain it. The cafe staff were friendly and efficient. Tasty homemade cake with tea/coffee. Well worth a visit if you come to liskeard.

I have family connections with the town going back three or four generations. I remember when he town bustled, the cattle market was busy, the court sat regularly over the open market down on he corner of Pike St, Methodism held sway but down at heel Webbs hotel retained a louche feel despite shabby decor and a constant stench of stale beer and ciggie smoke. In those days Stuart House was occasionally pointed out but was a private house and generally went unnoticed. I came back to Loskeard a few weeks ago and with an hour to kill wandered in. Bits of it feel a little twee, others slightly patronising but the general feel is friendly informative and useful. Not too sure how much of the outside looks as it did for much of his history and the interior seems to have been substantially hacked about and refitted but there is a general impression of informed and careful conservation and restoration. The cafe is good, the shop OK and for Liskeard the general impression is impressive. If you have any local history interest it is well worth looking in.

Driven on by excellent reviews my husband and I were really disappointed by this atrocity of a museum/heritage centre. Historical rooms were amateurish and badly put together. Seeing photos of a Tudor house in Norfolk, some dreadful copies of van dyke paintings and the entire room dedicated to how the masons built a Masonic lodge somewhere in Liskeard were particular highlights. Thankfully, it had one redeeming feature which was that it was free....

Our family went to view a local exhibition. This is a hidden gem not to be expected in Liskeard. The volunteers work hard to keep the place running to a high standard which is in keeping with the era it is portraying.
The gardens were beautiful and I felt very special to be shown around by my old Headmaster!!!

...to realise I have made a mistake by not visiting before. So many times have I driven past and not realised what an asset Liskeard possesses. Do not expect too much but for a free visitor attraction you get a small exhibition on Cornwall in the Civil War, a cafe, a gift shop, an interesting garden and, until September, a small craft display...

Stuart House is unique. It is a hidden gem in open sight in Liskeard. If you drive through the town you will pass it. But, like the rest of essential Liskeard, it is far better to park, to stroll and to discover. Stuart House is lovingly manned by an extraordinary group of volunteers. There are end to end exhibitions, displays, concerts, performances, Liskeard Poetry Group, Old Cornwall Society (and their archive) and so on. There is always something of interest happening. Visit the fascinating 17th Century Gentleman's garden. Browse the small but significant shop where you will find wonderful local artwork. Take a proper Cornish Cream tea in the tea in the Old Kitchen. Find out why it is called Stuart House (Charles I is the clue). You will find your time has passed so pleasantly.

Unfortunately there was a lot of work going on with most of the rooms closed off, however what was available to see was of interest We visited on a lovely sunny day and had tea in the most attractive garden with lots of interesting features to view. This would be a great place to come to when fully opened

Came in and were treated very politely when we spent an hour or so in the sheltered central garden. Not quite so impressed by the historical rooms.

having just moved into the area I was keen to find out a little more about the history of the area. Especially considering it is free to get in, it is well worth a visit. The staff are super-friendly and informative, and there's enough to keep you occupied for about an hour, more if your visit coincides with one of the local exhibitions. The cafe is lovely and the garden interesting. I found out all about Liskeard's role in the civil war; all very interesting. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.
