We needed an easily accessible picnic spot, having spent the morning climbing up and down the Louisos gorge to visit the monasteries either side. Our hostess at the Archontiko Deligiani in Dimitsana, recommended the visit here. It was one of the highlights of our twelve day trip to the Peleponnese. Completely unspoilt, easy walk from the car extensive exposed ruins in a small space and carpeted with wild flowers. If you are as lucky as us , you'll probably be the only people there apart from a few family paddling in the stream. There are no explanations, sign-boards or well-trodden tracks, but this adds to the charm - you can read it up when you get back.

Very peaceful just the sound of running water from the river below. Not much to see must be a lot still uncovered. Sadly no boards to explain what the builds were but still very interesting to walk round knowing that some very important people probably walked on the same stones that you are. Would love to found out more about it. The site can be reached from either Dimitsana or Stemnitsa. There is a small area to park your car then walk across the bridge and climb up to the left to the site or walk around to the right by the small church and take the higher path left. It's free to enter.

I enjoyed my visit to the site if ancient Gortys, but what is currently available to see is only a small fraction of the full remains. There appears to be a new museum popping up next to the site, so maybe that will open up the site in a better way. So, as a small site, fine, but hopefully more is to come

This is worth a diversion if you are travelling between Karitena and Dimitsana. Take the left fork down to the Lousios River - signposted Gortys. You will then come to one of the loveliest spots on this river a sit flows beneath an elegant Venetian bridge. Cross the river and you came to Gortys. The ruins are not fantastic but the setting is. The whole thing is wondefully sylvan.
