This was our first family skiing holiday with our two kids who are 13 and 10. We have skied before (few years ago) but the kids had not.

Pamporovo offered excellent value lessons, ski hire and lift pass packages which was one of the reasons for going.

There are about 30 km of slopes which is more than enough for beginners. For intermediates and above it was starting to be dull before the end of the week especially with the snow conditions this year.

We used the ski school at area 3 as arranged with holiday company. Most hotels run shuttle buses to the slopes- not possible to walk to slopes or ski in ski out so you are restricted to the times of the shuttle buses.

Biggest issue we had with ski school was that our kids were in beginner lessons while we were in intermediate lessons. We assumed that at lunch time all groups would congregate at the same location and we only gave our kids a few Lev each to buy a drink if they stopped mid morning but hadn’t factored in not seeing them until their afternoon lessons were finished. A phone call from our child meant we had to ski down to meet them to give money for lunch. This got better as the week went on and they got to the top slopes.

Lack of snowfall and high temperatures weren’t ideal but to be fair the workers during the night groomed the slopes well and filled in many ‘bare’ patches. This made skiing up to lunch very enjoyable but the afternoon temperatures meant lots of the slopes were very slushy and getting to the lifts was hard work getting through the melting snow.

The resort itself was in shut down mode with only a few hotels and restaurants in the village open.

Good on the slopes was ‘ok’ . Instructors take you to their preferred ones (they obviously get a little commission for this).

A walk up the tower at the top is good although you pay 6 lev per adult and 4 for a child. Food and drinks looked good in the restaurant at the top.

Alex’s Irish Bar at the bottom station was excellent after a day of skiing while waiting for the bus.

Take extra Lev with you as many places refused to take card and when they did they added 10% to the price.

Excellent resort for beginners and adequate for intermediates if snow conditions are decent.

Excellent for beginners and groups of young adults looking to learn to ski. Two of the four in our group have experience skiing and decided to partner up and go on a couples ski holiday.
1) direct flight to Plovdiv from Luton London with Wizzair, flights aren’t as regular to Plovdiv so check in advance what dates you need. Also, brace yourselves to push in front for bag drop and jump through security to catch your flight during peak times (school holidays) - otherwise you just won’t make it and we sadly had 19 passenger luggage offloaded as they missed check in due to security (the blessings of Luton airport!)
2) rent a car to drive from (book online TopRentACar and pick up straight from airport by going to the booth) Plovdiv to hotel in Pamporovo, some hotels can offer a transfer service at an extra fee. Getting a rental car was a bit of a faff but helped us make our own journey there on our own terms and the car was handy cruising the trip due to our slight issue and misunderstanding with hotel transfer to ski centre (read on)
3) find a hotel, don’t need a hotel to be too close to the ski slopes as most hotels offer shuttle services,
4) book ski gear through online website and do it 3 working days (if going Pamporovo - 7 days for Bansko and Borovets) in advance of your arrival. This will ensure you ski passes are ready and printed in time, many visitors to the resort couldn’t access the lifts as they ordered a pass on the day and there is a delay in which they make the ski passes especially if systems are down due to weather (we saw others have this issue!) . By booking in advance the ski centre will hand deliver the ski passes to you directly the day you arrive/before you go and ski the following day - we used bulgariaski.com - 4b ) their office is at a different ski centre so remember to look/request for ski rental offices to be at the same site as where the hotel shuttle is offering to drop you off. Most of the hotels seem to drop you off at Studenets , whereas we booked online and found out too late that our ski centre was the Malina site not studenets where the hotel drops guests off.
5) booking hotels via booking.com is better , and if you book far enough in advance, can get an apartment/studio. We didn’t however so we had two double rooms in a hotel - we booked DIRECTLY with the hotel as their prices were cheaper than when booking through booking.com - the rooms were quite expensive for the facilities on offer - 70s Soviet style with the big box tvs
6) food is heavy and limited in variety unless you’re willing to fork out a bit of money on the grill items and on the Western European tourist traps that are expensive if you’re in a budget. Superstore Alaska are your convenience stores and you can buy some snacks as well as packed lunch style food - many have counters that sell homemade stews and pastries/baked goods.
7. lunch can be quite expensive - we recommend avoiding the ski hotel restaurants by the slopes and go for the “snack bars” instead for greater value and quality.
8. People were friendly and most spoke some English

On 9th February 2024, I was on a skiing holiday, when a Male Ski Instructor in his mid to late 40’s from “Enjoy” Ski school Pamporovo, Bulgaria (as per his yellow ski jacket which stated Ski -Instructor on the back of jacket from “Enjoy” ski school, without warning pushed me through Ski -Lift Barriers which caused me to fall and could have caused a serious injury to myself and others - thankfully not. You would also recognise him with his Orange/Grey head woolly hat. This individual should immediately have his Ski Instruction qualifications removed. He is a danger to ski students and those visiting Pamporovo ski resort to ski!

Everyone here has their hand in your pocket; money to pee, taxis from the ski slopes after 4!, steaks priced In restaurants by the 100g (30L per 100g! ), one lift to the top! 10% extra for paying by card! The list goes on….and on. Don’t come here cause it’s not cheap and yet it’s so cheap; hotels falling apart, cold food and rude, rude, rude people

I recommend you a new place. Lodge pub. It is up near Studenetz TV tower. Here you will find a good bulgarian cuisine, at a decent prices. If you enjoy to ski over a full day, you will be satisfied at this open pub. The sun, the food, a draught beer and a kindly staff, they will make you a better day. Try it! Bulgarian cuisine

We went to Snejanka tower with children 1 and 3 yrs old. There are mini slopes perfect for sleighs and learning skiing for a very first time.

I’ve stayed in Pamporovo Central Apartments at August 2022. Did not found this host in list of choices.
Lovely place in the very center of Pamporovo. Great location. Main room with fireplace and very comfortable sofa. Panoramic windows from the bedroom and the main room with entrance to the balcony. From all windows amazing panoramic view of the endless coniferous forest, Snezhanka and the Rhodopes. The kitchen is stocked with everything needed for a comfortable stay. Very quiet. Supermarket within walking distance.
Recommend this host and place.

I’ll make this one fairly simple.

Pamporovo is a BEAUTIFUL resort. I LOVE this place. It’s like a second home. I’ve been here three times now and enjoyed them all. The town is friendly, small and excellent value for money. The ski area is gorgeous, limited runs but they are LONG runs, you get your money’s worth. The food on the mountain is EXCELLENT. I heartily recommend Bar Enjoy by the main ski centre and Golden Eagle at the top of the mountain.

So why only three stars?

THE BELL MEN! If Pamporovo management got rid of these vultures, this would be a 5-star review. They pounce on day one and then don’t stop hassling you until you part with a minimum of 30 lev. They are an annoyance that you can do without.

Please don’t let this put you off going there. The resort and the people are fantastic. Just be firm and ignore the bellmen…

Nice and snall ski resort, but with a small ski area (around 30 km of slopes) and low customer service in all areas, ski lift services, shops, restaurants. Food not so good, except ome lovely pla e on the slopes - Ochko Holidays where you can have good soup and Rodopi specialties.
