Hard to review downtown HGB!!-Mixed Bag - Beautiful and not so!

I walked most of Harrisburg late Summer 2016 - what a 'mixed-bag'! Some areas are gorgeous - I must say, the exception. The city is, overall, extremely, 'run-down' so many... read more

Downtown Harrisburg is unique as the state capitol and an interesting place to visit from its history, government to its dining. Many things to do and see. However, travel too far, and you will find the blight that inhabits many of our cities.

I walked most of Harrisburg late Summer 2016 - what a 'mixed-bag'! Some areas are gorgeous - I must say, the exception. The city is, overall, extremely, 'run-down' so many houses not maintained -occupied till they fall apart, causing the occupants to vacate.

A compact downtown area. Withing easy walking distance were lots of restaurant choices, the wonderful capitol building, book stores, shops and an artists' gallery. A nice afternoon.

Other than the state Capitol building and perhaps Saint Patrick's Cathedral it's a bit of a lonely city. I saw too many empty storefronts in the downtown corridor. Strawberry Commons was lacking interesting shops and had relatively little there to merit a extended visit. See the state capital then move along.

There are a lt of nice restaurants downtown. Most of which are very reasonably priced. If you go after dark stick to the main restaurant area (front street).

Came here with boyfriend while visiting for Hershey Park. I would recommend Mcgrath's pub if you are looking for a nice spot to stop and get some drinks or food. We also really enjoyed going towards city island and looking out over the water. We also visited the capital building which was beautiful. For dinner we went to Appalachian brewing... More

There is plenty to do in downtown Harrisburg. Of course there's the gorgeous state Capitol building, the Capitol complex with the fountain and parks, shopping, lovely old churches, and the dinosaur art! We enjoyed taking photos of the various dinosaurs that are scattered around town, all painted uniquely, and the many churches too. Parking is expensive, but because of this,... More

Free street parking on Sunday was a bonus. It was nice to walk around to see the dinosaur art. Walked across the bridge. Nice views. Restaurants looked nice.

There are some museums if you have the time, and the thoroughly worthwhile National Civil War Museum is not far away. But unless you are "civil-minded" or a Pennsylvania kid on a school trip, I am not aware of anything that you really would miss just by seeing the state capitol from the outside and driving across the vast river....
