The term "county history" evokes for some a museum-full of dusty mannequins and farmers' barbed wire collections. That's not always - or even often - true, and Cumberland County Historical Society is an example of how good these facilities can be. We came particularly to look at the exhibits and archival materials on the Carlisle Indian School, which brought Indian... More

This is an odd place - a combination gift shop, mini-museum and tourist info hub. The gift shop portion is over-priced, but not too tacky, and the museum has a few interesting items, but where this place really excels is in the back where you can get maps showing all the local points of interest and brochures for every attraction... Nice space to view and study local history. I especially like their gift shop on High Street. It carries books, art, gifts, etc.

We stopped by Carlisle on our way home to Pittsburgh from Gettysburg and visited the Museum section of the History Center located on the second floor. We were thoughly impressed with the extensive displays featuring a local items ranging from the 1720's to the 1960's. The collection is fascinating and beautifully organized. I was particularly taken with the display of... More

Visit this place! It has great history of Jim Thorpe, the local area, the Carlisle Indian School and so much more. You will need 2 hours to see and hear most of it. The docents are EXCELLENT. They even give you directions to other places in the area.

Mrs. Fidler welcomed our party with great enthusiasm and proceeded to provide a narrated, guided tour of this wonderful spot. Later, Dr. Boardman, guided a look at the newly opened Greater Carlisle Heart & Soul exhibit.

We loved this museum. It was as good as any of the 100s we have visited across America. We are the members of the 60s generation so we loved, loved, loved their current main exhibit. The museum and library are free. The volunteers were very informative.

Lovely displays and knowledgeable volunteers. Of course, the whole history of the Carlisle Indian School is a magnificent look at an important part of American History in the saga of Native Americans.
