(thank you Gaetano: the winebus tour owner for the recommendation and ride)
Our visit to Antico Castello winery was truly a highlight of our trip to the Taurasi DOCG region. From the moment we arrived, Francesco made us feel incredibly welcome with his warmth and enthusiasm, as you would expect from an engineer; maybe I’m biased :)

Francesco guided us through the cellar (and the vineyard after that), sharing the fascinating history of the family winery and the traditional while contemporary appracoch they use to craft their wines (the maceration, the wood for aging, the duration beyond DOCG rules, etc.). His understanding of history, art and science of wine and above all passion for winemaking was clear and truly made the experience special. We had the pleasure of tasting the Greco 2019 i believe (Irpinia DOC but as good as the di Tufo), Taurasi 2016 (a very special one), and one all the Taurasi Reserva 2013. That was my favorite for the day, or let me say the trip with true strong yet approachable strength, the delicate tannins of a Barolo/Bronello with the elegant nose of a barcersco (or I may even extend to a grand cru Burgandy; I’m sure you won’ take my word, try for yourself), leave the 2013 to breath a bit in the glass or in the cellar for a few years (or a decade). Each wine was outstanding, showcasing the unique characteristics of the region, the terroir and the cru (actually each was a single vineyard, cru, as you will see in the winery tasting room wall).

Chiara, the sister, and their mom were also wonderful, contributing to the welcoming atmosphere and sharing delightful stories about their family's winemaking and hospitality traditions. The personal touch and family spirit at Antico Castello made our visit unforgettable. The Dr mom's food fresh from the kitchen esp the tiramisu will have you come for the food alone (check the tiramisu recipie on their YouTube channel)

If you're ever in the Taurasi region, I highly recommend a visit to Antico Castello. Francesco and his family will ensure you have an exceptional experience! (come with Gaetano of course)

Amazing experience for our family! Francesco explained the entire process from grape to bottle, showing us the cellars and the storage process. The tasting experience included an amazing lunch of antipasti, pasta, dulce, and of course the delicious wines, olive oil, and jams made in the winery. We plan to take all our guests to this incredible place!

On our family trip to Campania we made sure we visited Antico Castello Winery.
This boutique winery is a hidden gem in the Irpinia region of Campania. The experience here is unlike any other winery. We were guided by family owners of the vineyard, Francisco and Chiara Romano who speak fluent English. Their personal knowledge of the whole winery experience is amazing from vine to table. The wine tasting experience is another attribute of this winery. The selection of whites led by the Fiano is delicious, while the reds, led by their signature Taurasi is majestic. These wine selections were paired with a Mamma Romano homemade and delicious lunch for our family, all served with special warm Italian hospitality. You will not want to miss this special winery when in the Campania region! ❤️

Stumbling across Antico Castelle was an incredible surprise! The family was so warm and welcoming, we almost had no idea we were crashing a private event! Still, we were given a tour of the winery, a table, and Italian hospitality at its finest.

The simple yet elegant flavors wedged between our wine tasting was nostalgic and saporito.

We even booked our own family event for my 6 year old’s birthday dinner next week!

The literal icing on the cake, when I asked where we could grab a local cake for the birthday party, Chiara the daughter of the proprietors responded “Yes, mamma can make a cake”.

We walked out not only with two reds and two whites, but also with their own chestnut honey and small batch olive oil from their mercantile store.

5 out of 5 for everything!
Knowledgeable staff. Homemade food. English and Italian spoken. Wine tour was very through. Not an old vineyard but the history of the land and the modern feel of the casa was excellent. Prices were very affordable ans much less overpriced than many other mainstream wineries. Will 100% recommend and will 100% go back!!

Chiara coordinated our family’s Sunday afternoon visit. After a quick tour of the vineyard, we settled at a table for wine tasting and a lunch made by mamma. Both the wine and lunch were amazing and we truly enjoyed talking with Chiara and mamma while we ate. We bought a few cases of taurasi and fiano. It’s less than 1 1/2 hr from Naples and worth the visit to this small family vineyard.

Via email arranged a morning tour and tasting with Chiara. In spite of arriving late due to traffic, Chiara greeted us with a smile and a hug. She explained the vineyard, juicing, fermentation, and aging perfectly. Francesco, her brother, appeared and was charming. The tour of the winery and cellar was awesome. When it came time for tasting Chiara lead us to a table loaded with dishes prepared by Mommy! We eagerly sampled each one as we tasted 4 red wines and 1 white wine. Oh my! The wines were amazing and the pairings were incredible. We talked about wine and shared family stories for over an hour. Truly an experience we will remember for a long, long time.

Antico Castello is a hidden gem. The service was beyond expectations, and their commitment to tradition and quality shows in everything they do. A must visit if you’re in the area and a can’t-miss if you’re in search of good Taurasi.
