This is a great place to learn about the early life of Oregon or the west. They have the town's original fice alert bells. They would ring a bell that corresponded to a particular area so the residents would know where to go to fight a fire. There is a carriage garage filled with well-preserved carriages and so much more.

This museum could be so much more than it is! The history of the fort and local farming is good, but it seems that the museum has accepted every single item that old people wanted to donate. Thus, there is no organized story to help understand what you are looking at. The grounds are pleasant and there is a dramatic view of Mt. Adams.

Interesting history. The house has artifacts and the docents know the history well. There are also so vintage carriages with are really cool to see.

I love museums. I seldom tour a museum I don't like. Today was the exception. This "museum" is nothing more than an amalgamation of donated items. There is no rhyme or reason to the displays. When someone donates something, docents stick it somewhere. Lots of artifacts with no captions, interpretation or dates. No flow or continuity. No overall theme or message other than "Here is some old stuff to look at."

This is a great museum if you are into the period of exploration/settlement during the pioneer period of Oregon's statehood. There is a great collection of antique wagons from local hotels, merchants and ranchers that is stored on site and is one of the most complete period collections in the west, according to experts. It's a must see if you are an old wagon buff.

This is small house that was the Surgeon's dwelling inside of the fort. We enjoyed the period furnishings and the displays of antique implements and photos from the period. This museum is worth your time, the folks guiding you are very friendly and knowledgable.

The main building was constructed as a lavish, for the time, home for an officer at Fort Dalles. It's not furnished as an officer's home; instead, it's a collection of donated items illustrating the history of the The Dalles and the Columbia Gorge. There are some cute little gems, such as example schoolwork by Oregon students that was displayed at the World's Fair. Across the street, is an old homestead that was moved to the location for preservation purposes. The volunteer staff are exceedingly friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed chatting with them about The Dalles.

Fort Dalles was a United States Army output that was involved primarily with wars and relations with local Native Americans. The Fort Dalles Museum is housed in the surgeon's quarters, which is the remaining building of he Fort. The Surgeons Quarters were built prior to the US Civil War.

I enjoyed meeting the enthusiastic group of volunteers here who were more than willing to let me explore the museum and answer any and all questions I had.

I enjoyed seeing the unique collection of pioneer and military artifacts and antique cars and wagons. There is also the Anderson homestead here also.

The price when I visited was $5 for adults, $4 dollars for seniors.

Note: There is a steep stair case in the Surgeons Quarters so to fully see the museum one must be able to manage stairs. This was OK for me, but did want to mention in case its a concern to others. There are several areas one can still be able to see.

A fun place to visit and some nice people to chat with, ask them to play you some music. Be sure to go upstairs to see the western room and the woman room.

This is a great way to get your questions answered about all things local. It is lovingly cared for by the staff. Info on the trail, Indians, the dam and the geology of the area. They also have a Swedish built home 150 years old. Easy to find up the hill from downtown.
