Description:

Abacela is a world-class, multi-award winning winery and viticulture...

Abacela is a world-class, multi-award winning winery and viticulture success story. 21 years ago when founders Earl and Hilda Jones planted its first vines they had no way of knowing what the outcome would be. They were scientists with zero winemaking experience who left secure careers and trekked 2700 miles west, kids in tow, to test a hypothesis. Abacela was an experiment they hoped would answer a question that had puzzled them for years: Why doesn't America produce any fine varietal Tempranillo wine? Earl and Hilda probably weren't the first enophiles to wonder why the great grape of Spain's famous Rioja wines was mysteriously absent from American fine wine. However they were the first to approach the question with scientific rigor, form a hypothesis and then devote their lives to testing it. Abacela is the result of one ordinary family's curiosity and determination that transformed their lives, built one of Oregon's best-loved wineries and influenced winegrowing not only in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, but across America.

Place is pristine with good wine and beautiful surroundings. We visited it after completing the safari. We also hiked bit to reach one of the top gazebo. Wine testing is reasonable priced 10$ per person for 5 different wines. One word of caution there wine bottle can be 25$ or more range.

They like to emphasize their affection for Spanish wine, and there is a plus to that. I like Albarino, and they make it. Lots of comments about Temprenillo make me think most people have never enjoyed this grape; they offered two. Knowledgeable, attentive server poured decent amounts to taste. We chose the $10 5-tast medley to maximize our experience. It... More

A group of us (six) visited the winery and enjoyed it. Even purchased some wines to be sent back home to New Mexico. The people were pleasant and helpful. Would definitely return. Thanks.

The wine at Abacela is divine! Heavenly. More than excellent. Tasting Room staff is exceptionally well-versed in all their varietals and vintages. They were the first winery in the U.S. to plant, harvest, and bottle tempranillo. Just yum. Go there.

Website says open until 6pm, drove a half hour to get there by 5:40 only to be told they couldn't give us a tasting because they closed at 6pm. Rated #2 of things to do in Oregon. Waste of time. If you want to close at 530, website should say so. We frequent Oregon wineries often, but will never be... More

Last year I would have given this winery a 5 rating; however, in the past year the customer service from the ladies behind the counter has gone down hill. I understand having to wait a few minutes to get service if all the employees are helping other staff, but having to wait 30 minutes to just pick up your wine... More

The winery is modern, attractive and pleasant. Nice ambiance. The wine is fair. It's not Sonoma, Napa or Pasa Robles quality, but good for a small local market. The prices however are very aggressive, $30 for a run of the mill bottle, $50 for premium. The sampling fees are ridiculous at $5 for a syringe full of wine for the... More

Thank you for sharing your feedback Rick, we appreciate your comments. We apologize that your visit was less than stellar. After review, we have decided to change our policy regarding fee reversal for the Reserve level wines. We will now waive those fees upon purchase. Your words in action! We hope that in the future, when visiting the beautiful Umpqua... More

After seeing all the TripAdvisor reviews, we decided to come here for a tasting a picnic on our way to Portland We did not have a day for tasting and sampling. We had a very good experience. We like Spanish wines, and it was interesting to visit a U.S. winery focused on Spanish old world grapes. As the winery had... More

Abecela doesn't want to compete with the famous makers of Cab, Pinot or even Chardonnay. It loves grapes on the fringes of respectability, especially Rhone and Spanish varietals. Not your favs? If you're driving north on I-5 don't fail to go 5 miles off the interstate to this lovely location in the vineyards. Order the antipasto plate, which is more... More

We went to three wineries to sample the variety of wines near Roseburg. Abacela was clearly the nicest and classiest of the three. The grounds were impeccably groomed. The interior was large and beautifully decorated. The two servers were knowledgeable in the types of wines they were serving. They also serve lunch. There is a charge to sample four different...
