We stopped by the wildlife refuge on a sunny Saturday morning to get in a quick walk before the rain set in. This is a nice little sanctuary next to the river in SE Portland. We were able to bring our (leashed) dog along with us, and enjoyed seeing the pretty water and sights, including a view of Mount Saint Helens. We also saw a fair amount of wildlife, including a couple bald eagles flying over the small lake. Parking was easy at the lot at the south end (at Sellwood Park). Overall it was a nice place to get out into a little bit of nature for a couple hours.

It is always a pleasure being a tourist in one's own hometown. Having never been here, we both were happy to have a chance for a picnic and nice hike to the viewing platform. We saw a variety of birds and fish, plus heard some frogs. Very few visitors, so one can have some quiet time. Definitely worth bringing binoculars and/or a spotting scope. It was quite warm in the open field on the way in, but really cooled down in the shade of trees along the path.

Bring your binoculars and camera. The best time is the migration periods spring and fall but it is a wonderful exploration at anytime.

In the middle of a busy trip to Portland, we found this place. Forget it being a refuge for wildlife -- apart from the odd squirrel or duck, we didn't see much wildlife. But it is a wonderful refuge for two-legged primates and their four-pawed companions. Lots of shady, well maintained paths, and there's a real sense that you are in the woods far from a city (except for occasional sounds from the nearby amusement work or road).

Finding entry is the hard part. Coming from the north (downtown side) would be an easier approach than from the south, as we learned the hard way. If you are bicycling or on foot, and don't need to find the small parking lot, you'll avoid this problem.

city living getting you down? need fresh air and outdoor scenery? 10 minutes from downtown hides Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge... 15 minutes to quick look / see or more than an hour walk around the entire site-- will clear your head and change your thoughts to wild things.

today there were Egrets, Blue/Gray Hurons, probably 5 kinds of ducks. Loons?

Bring binoculars. shorter path is paved for strollers, wheel chairs, bikes, etc. exploring areas for kids (tadpole).

Long path is well maintained trail. runners, dogs, all well behaved. can be muddy after or during rain.

good all seasons of the year, just dress for it.

a treasure.

Across the paved trail leading to the oaks amusement park lies another world. A world of herons, frogs, turtles, and wild ducks. Many trails crisscross the oaks bottom wildlife refuge but they all essentially loop a big swampy area that is traveled enough to be safe but lonely enough to commune with nature. Sometimes you can glimpse the Ferris wheel rising in the distance. After the 2-3 mile, mostly level walk you can buy a corn dog or rest back at the park loaded with screaming happy kids.

I spotted the sign as I was driving toward Westmoreland on SE Milwaukie Ave and made note of it. On my return trip, I pulled over and walked part of the trail to get an idea what the place was like.

The path is paved and easy to walk. The surrounding are pure mother nature. A great place to take an long stroll and just enjoy the scenery. I saw a jogger smile as she jogged by.

I will have to return to take one great big long walk and see this place in its full splendour when the day is nice and sunny and must earlier than at dusk when I pulled over for my look at the trail

I spend some time at the tadpole pond. Read the signs and noticed how wet the area was. I'm sure all our rain helped to cover the walking stones here.

We did this hike early in the morning and loved the easy trail around the lake. We were able to spot heron, ducks, bluejays and other birds during the hour walk. It’s a very popular trail with dog owners and those with small children.

I biked here from the Portland Convention Center to escape the city for a morning. I stayed on the paved bike trail, and was a pretty ride. I wish I had brought my binoculars, because there were some great water birds. There were a few people set up with tripods along the trail.
