Not being from Portland I keep being surprised by the beautiful parks here. We just thought we were going to a park, not realizing it again was bigger than we thought with plenty of opportunities for nice walks. And because of its elevation it also has beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding areas.

Just don't go here expecting a park with activities for children and a water fountain to play in. There is not much more than the trails, views and being outdoors but it was worth the trip for us.

This is a great place to just walk and wander and experience both wildlife and a few people. Some of the trails are challenging and others are a lot easier.

If you can catch this hike to the meadow summit view point you will not regret it. Plenty of parking is available at the main entrance to the trails. There are bathrooms as well. There were no paper maps of the trails available so I would recommend taking a photo of the sign at the beginning of the trail because there are several trails and they can become confusing. Watch for bikers and joggers. The bikers can come through pretty fast so be aware. In fact I saw a uni cyclist while I was hiking!! At the top you reach meadows and then there is a loop at the top where you can get a great view of several (basically all) of the local mountains. I went on an overcast day but I plan to return on a clear day.

I’m new to town and I had heard lots of positive feedback about the park . It’s not that bad but I wasn’t impress to go back.

I’m more into parks that have more large trees and less dry areas. I found this park too dry and very far from Portland . The views were OK .

It gets extremely cold and windy up in the park so bring warm clothes for sure !

Beautiful hike through this butte. It can be a bit confusing as the interior trial maps don't show much of the butte. If you don't want to explore and possibly lose where you are, you should either get a map or take a picture at any of the trail heads. At the top there is a mountain/butte finder pointing out and giving some brief information of the buttes and mountains that can be seen. Check out the visitors center where it shows the various sized pipes that take water throughout Portland.

There are a multitude of choices of paths you can take up and down the butte depending on your starting point, so if you're bad with cardinal directions, make sure you take a cellphone to get a ride back to your start if you get lost. There's a visitor center if you enter from the north side, but you can literally hike up or down any side of the butte which is pretty long on one side. Great shaded hike for the summer but watch out for bikers as they go pretty fast on the downhill.

Beautiful hilly stroll with views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens. Water fountains for people and dogs a real plus!

I rode my bicycle up to Powell Butte to enjoy the panoramic views and the ride along the trails. It has been many years since I was up here last. Some work had been done over the past few years and it was easy to see all the changes and improvements.

I saw that there is a visitor center after between the parking lot and the Mountain View Trail that goes up to the summit of Powell Butte. It looks like it is being completed and wasn’t open just yet. I wonder what kind of information the center will have available to the public in the future.

Now there are rustic wooden rails that are at the sides of the trail leading up to the summit. This is a great addition and highlights the path against the open meadows.

I stopped at the Mountain Finder up on the summit. It is horseshoe shape with markers facing the direction you need to look to see the mountains off in the distance on the horizon. There are also plaques with brief information about the mountains. Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, and a few Can bee seen from here.

I road along Summit lane and its views of the meadows until I came to Douglas Fir Trail. From here I rode downhill and into the trees. It was like I was riding in a forest and yet I was very close to the urban area of the city. I followed the trail to where it leaves Powell Butte Nature Park at the south end. This is where the Springwater corridor borders Powell Butte.

The Springwater Corridor is a path that runs from the Oaks Bottom wildlife refuge area all the way out to the Boring, Oregon area. This is a paved recreational trail that is about 21 miles from one end to the other. Or 42 miles round trip. It used to be a rail line that ran between these two points. Now it is a path used by bicyclist and people out for a nice long healthy walk. I used it to head over to the Leach Botanical Garden over at 6704 SE 122nd Ave just off of SE Foster Road.

A very pleasant walk uphill through the forest leads to stunning panoramic views of the mountains and countryside surrounding Portland. There are multiple access points - make sure you remember where you came in (we didn't and wandered around a bit, but it was all good!)

Beautiful park with gradual elevation trails. Perfect for many levels of fitness. Dogs welcome. Hawks abound for identification. Views of the high and not so high peaks. If you live close you should visit often.
