If you are in Portland for a few days, go check this out. It predicts the weather for the following day. Sun for nice weather, Heron for drizzle and Dragon for an approaching storm. Located in Pioneer Square. Just another weird (but cool) thing about Portland!

The Weather Machine is a bronze sculpture located in the northwest corner of Pioneer Courthouse Square In Portland, Oregon. It is about 30-feet tall shaped like a pole with an orb resting on top. It displays a prediction for the weather each day at noon for the next 24 hours.

The Weather Machine displays one of three different metal symbols for its prediction. A sun for clear and sunny weather. A blue heron for drizzle. And a dragon and mist for rain and stormy weather. It also displayed the temperature with colored lights along its stem.

The Weather Machin has been a fixture of Pioneer Courthouse Square since 1988.

Not sure who decided to put this quirky kinetic sculpture in a far corner of Pioneer Courthouse Square, but in my opinion, it should have been placed somewhere up in Washington Park or along the waterfront. Why? Because as I’m reading about the machine, trying to figure out its mechanics, I found myself constantly fending off homeless begging for money or shouting something incoherent towards me. After a while I gave up, walked away and took the weather machine for what it is - another one of Portland’s oddities.
