We visited during a Chinese cultural event and the square was hopping with a large crowd, several interesting food trucks, and a good show. Don't think it would be nearly as interesting, however, if there wasn't an event going on.

This is a cool little square in the heart of the city that has a Starbucks and outdoor seating. There are also food trucks parked there, although the egg truck is average at best, if you grab a coffee and a breakfast sandwich it's a fun place to sit and people watch. There are some cool photo stops in the square too and the animal fountains in the area are really cute.

We went by when we were in the area, and they were doing some set up for a show later. There were a few food trucks, a few sculptures, and people hanging out. Nothing special.

This square was referred to by someone as the heart of the city. There are some food trucks and a Starbucks. There are also a lot of beggars. I didn’t see anything fun or interesting.

This would be a beautiful central location were it not for the profoundly mentally ill, drug addicts, and vagrants.I do not consider this place to have a homeless problem. This place has a problem with vagrancy and drugs and mental illness..

There are some adorable animal statues by the courthouse and the square entrance has some historic gates marking the entrance to what once was an enormous hotel. Apparently the initial hotel investor went broke so the local citizens paid to complete the hotel. The hotel was demolished and the square was eventually installed. I liked the animals but the square didn't hold my interest until I read the sign about the weather statue. There is a tall statue in the corner of the square that keeps track of local weather. Every day at noon, the statue performs, which is AWESOME. The entertainment starts with an instrumental melody announcing the enchantment to come. You will then see the bird on the statue disappear into a dome after which a dragon and spikes emerge. Water mist gets sprayed during the performance, need I say more? Go see this.

They have a beautiful Christmas tree set up every year. There are food carts nearby that are open during certain hours. There are places to sit and relax aftr walking around or shopping.

A central square in Portland that was very busy meaning we didn't realise we were at Pioneer square.

It was just ok though, not worth a special trip.

I cannot understand how the city of Portland decided to replace a once grand hotel with a soulless brick square. Every time I visited the square I was overcome with the stench of urine, marijuana and stale booze, not to mention having to endure watching the multitude of homeless ply the area, constantly asking for money. Aside from being a convenient transit hub and site of several food trucks (I had lost my appetite prior to ordering anything), I’d skip this.
