- Rebecca W2 contributionsSuper Fun Riding The Rails!!My husband and I took the Mt. Hood Railroad train ride a couple of times before, so we were very excited to "ride the rails" on the railbike. "Texan" Loren with the British accent was the perfect tour guide and the rest of the crew were friendly and helpful. Pedaling when we felt like it and kicking in the e-assist made it comfortable and easy. We had a ball and recommend this outing for young adults up through seniors like us.Hi Rebecca! Thank you for adventuring with us on the Mount Hood Railroad railbikes! It sounds like you had a fantastic time! Thank you for the kind words about Loren and our staff - we will pass them on! And we agree that the e-assist on the railbikes is a game changer...you can pedal hard or just sit back and relax. We love that it also makes the railbikes accessible to so many! We hope you will adventure with us again soon - perhaps on our *new* Halloween train or Christmas train? Thank you for taking the time to leave us a great review!Written 22 September 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 September 2023
- Darbie R10 contributionsLearn about where your food comes fromMom-in-law & I did the factory tour & the orchard tour & had the most amazing day! Andy was our tour guide for both. He was so knowledgeable & we got to ask a million questions. For the factory tour, we got 2 free gift basket items then got to pick out other items to include in our gift baskets at a reduced price. For the orchard tour, we left with our choice of pear! The day was perfect. We left with so much knowledge & respect for the agricultural industry. Thank you, Andy!Hi darbier2022, Thank you for adventuring with us at the Mount Hood Railroad and Fruit Company! We love that you jumped right in and fully immersed yourself the bounty of the Hood River valley! Farmer Andy is a gem, and we love how he shares his passion for farming and the Fruit Company with visitors like yourselves! Exceptionally friendly staff made the ride interesting. We stopped to enjoy a tour of an old fruit storage and packing building and a winery was open just a few steps away. - Darren J5 contributionsEat before you go.Went on a murder mystery ride with some friends and had a blast. Really good actors playing all the characters. I really thought that our food would have been than a half of a snack to share with 3 other people. $125.00 a person and we get a $4.00 sample of some food. WTF? If I would have known that I would have ate before the ride.Hello! Thank you for getting spooky with us on our 'Phantom of the Rails' Halloween Train! We are so glad to hear that you had a great time! We agree that the actors aboard were amazing and their talent helped to create the eerie story that unfolded along the tracks. We are sorry to hear the snacks aboard the train didn't meet your expectations. We appreciate the feedback and will bring that into the discussion in planning next years train ride. - Shawn DEugene, Oregon80 contributionsWe come to Mount Hood every year and this is a must have each time!Mount Hood Railroad has a new owner who is a local and it shows! We come to Hood River every year and have been on the railroad 3 times. Historically there was neglect, lack of management, and a general dirtiness to everything, but now it couldn't be better! The staff were delightful, the host (conductor) was spot on and in character the whole time, and the trip went through some of the prettiest scenery in Hood River. Highly recommended to all. My only criticism is that if I recall correctly it used to go a bit further, but now it stops at a fruit factory which was nice, but I'd prefer to go further.Thank you for sharing! We're so glad you've seen improvements under the new local ownership! We appreciate your kind words about our staff and scenic route. Thanks for your feedback about the journey's length. - melissagU5902YT5 contributionsTerrific visit to the Fruit CompanyThis review is for the Fruit Company Tour, which is associated with the Mount Hood Railroad now. Our business team decided to try the Fruit Company factory tour since we buy client gifts from them. It was part historical agriculture lesson, part facility production tour, part gift shop introduction and finally a class in how to build a gift basket. From the minute Andy greeted us at the door, we were impressed by his knowledge and passion. It was evident he loves his job! Fun and educational activity that was perfect for our group of 6.Thanks for sharing your experience with the Fruit Company Tour! We're so glad Andy's knowledge and passion left a good impression on you and your group. We're fortunate to have him. We're grateful you enjoyed the various activities. The Mt Hood Railroad's valley excursion is advertised as a 1.5 hour 3 mile trip. Unfortunately, our ride was cut short when the locomotive failed. Before the failure, we got all the way to the turnaround point and halfway back down the valley. Given the $49 adult ticket price, there was not as much to see as we expected. The tracks follow a river for about a mile or so, and then the train uses a switchback maneuver in which the train pulls forward of a switch, and then reverses direction and takes another track to climb up another hill. At the end point, the train simply again reverses direction and makes its return journey. It was early in spring, so most of the trees hadn't leafed out but the pear orchids were in full flower. There was a prerecorded narrative but the volume was too low to be understandable.
The train consist included a baggage car that carried the electric generator, two coaches and the lounge car. The heating system didn't carry much beyond the first coach, so most people were bundled up. The upholstery was torn on many seats and the coach interiors had a generally worn appearance. There was no food or beverage service.
With regard to the service interruption, there was little information while the crew worked for 30 minutes to make repairs. However, once it was clear that they were unable to get the locomotive back on line, there were periodic updates. The railroad shuttled the 30 or so passengers back to the station using a combination of track maintenance trucks and private vehicles. We got back about a couple of hours later than scheduled.
In summary, this scenic railroad's valley excursion is over priced, and the equipment is in poor shape. The staff, however, were earnest and handled a difficult situation well.

If you ever saw Alien Encounters on SNL with Kate McKinnon, It was the first thing that popped into my head reading these reviews because we certainly had a different experience. We went on a daytime trip. There was plenty of snow on the ground and since it's Mt. Hood and the brochure said the cars were heated we weren't bundled up. We froze all but the last 10 minutes of the trip. The rail car was old and beaten and the "Chefs" were obviously bored & wearing whites that were stained and filthy. Santa stopped by for a few minutes then disappeared just like the ridiculous amount of $$$ we paid. We do a Christmas adventure every year and this was our only disappointment in 10 years of activities!

I'd like to start this off by saying my fiance and I really enjoyed ourself! Something different and got us outside. Because it's advertised that children can come, we almost brought our kids. It said the bikes were assisted, so we felt it would be fine to only have 1 adult per bike. I am SO GLAD we didn't bring our children. The ride to the fruit orchards was very pleasant. We got a nice workout, but when we got tired we were able to use to assist (which is an awesome feature btw!). On the way back they told us theyd be turning OFF the assist, but that it'd be OK because it's mostly downhill and you can coast most of the way. This was not completely truthful. It's still a lot of work to get down the hill, without the assist. If you aren't peddling you're freaking heart out you'll hold up the line of people behind you. I was quite uncomfortable on the way down, and honestly a little upset that they had us go such a long way without any help from the assist. If it was just me and my child on the bike, no way would I have made it. Thank goodness for the people behind me who saw people struggling and showed us where we could turn on the electric bike button, even though it was against the rules, I didn't care at the point. We were dying. So, unless you're an Olympic runner, train on the pelaton bike, or have legs of STEEL, you're going struggle on the ride back down. I really felt compelled to write this for anyone who's thinking about bringing kids. Don't do it.

My wife loves Christmas time so much and the adult kids and I thought she would love all this had to offer. We had high expectations of seeing lots of lights and christmas fun.
We did enjoy the cookies and the hot cocoa and watching all of the little kids faces with the actors on the train. Too much fun. As adults, even though we didn’t have lil ones aboard, we still paid the same amount of money, we should still get the option to receive anything given to the little kids for our teens.
The train ride itself was a little rough also, first you get to ride backwards and then get to be on an un level train car, at least ours was leaning to one side most of the time, not too comfy.
The seats and table we sat at were comfortable and good lighting, the music was a little too loud at times though.
All in all, we think it was priced a little too high for what we seen and received on the ride.
But if you have lil ones, it looked like they had a blast on the trip.

This train experience is geared toward small children. As a senior couple sans kids, it was less than exciting. A little more than an hour long train ride on older, musty smelling train cars with uninteresting, bland scenery on a there and back trip. Train cars "dressed" with a bit of garland and lights. Elves serve lukewarm hot chocolate and a ginger cookie. Conductors punch the kids golden tickets like in the Polar Express movie. Santa makes a visit. It is certainly not worth the $140 they charge for two people and I can imagine many families would cringe at the price for adding a few kids.

Let me start with saying, as always, the staff is delightful. But the rest of the experience, not so much. We have taken the Polar Express Train several times over the years. I can not begin to express the disappointment we ALL had. It was awful! The music was way too loud, the seating was miserable especially for 6 adult size people. Our seating was so tight we were shoulder to shoulder with no leg room. No tables to set your drink and cookies on, so as you're trying to juggle your coat, purse, hat and gloves, you're also trying to juggle hot cocoa and cookies. At least were not trying to hold a child with drinks and cookies! Not enjoyable at all. The story was not engaging, even for the little ones sitting next to us. There is no longer glass top observation cars, I have always recommended this trip as very worth the money and time to anyone who asked. I am sad and sorry to say we will not be coming back, nor can I recommend this ride.I understand things change, but this change was not an improvement in our book.

For the price you pay, this train ride is not worth the money. We were hoping for a more magical experience. You get on an outdated train, are served cold cocoa and a cookie, stare outside into the darkness (we thought there would be more lights and things to see), are approached by some creepy characters in old worn out costumes, and listen to a story over the intercom that you can barely hear. The bathroom was disgusting with pee all over the floor so they should definitely have someone maintaining it during the trip. Santa barely hopped on board at the very end of the trip and spends a short amount of time with each table. You very briefly see one spot with a house lit up and Santa waving, but that’s about it. We traveled over two hours for this, paid good money, and spent money on a hotel to make it happen. Would not go back.

Mount Hood Railroad looks to be coming out of mothballs. We took a trip on their new railbikes yesterday. I believe it's just their second week of operation so everything is shiny. This is a FANTASTIC activity once you find your way to the attraction (we wandered through the yard until we were gently guided back to the depot where they put together our excursion). Railroad parking is free if you continue past the depot. Bikes are two-seaters with electric assist so you can pedal at your leisure or not at all. It's a 6 mi trip up to Pine Grove over and along the river, then the highway before you emerge from the trees to wonderful views of Mt. Hood and the valley. There's a stop at the Fruit Company store for a quick break, then back. Total trip time is a bit over 2 hours. The experience of being outside and on the rails going clickety-clack is just fantastic. I may have said that already. There's even a switchback on the trip, where they turn you around. Fun, fun, fun. It's expensive ($199 for two), but worth it. Better than a ballgame and I don't say that lightly.

This was a very disappointing experience for us. It’s my wife & I’s first wedding anniversary, and we booked the $200 RAILBIKES, also planning our weekend around having traveled here for them specifically. Rail bikes were supposed to be at 2:30PM/Sept 29.
The morning of our trip (09/29), we received a call that all railbikes have been cancelled “due to the heavy rain, that doesn’t look like it’s going to stop.”none of the forecast websites agree, but there’s nothing we can do about it, but be disappointed. Shut down due to rain, in the fall, in Oregon just blindsided us.
I couldn’t find information about cancellation due to inclement weather, so I wanted to make sure other travelers (potentially from farther away than our 3 hour drive) were aware — there’s a chance of rain *every* day in Oregon during fall. I would not trust this trip to not be force-cancelled any day after August. I would be weary of cancellation during wildfire season, and summer heat waves, also. We were offered full refund or reschedule, and opted for refund as we don’t have any trust in this experience outside of perfectly sunny weather.

Hi Christopher! We are deeply sorry that we had to cancel the railbike adventure you had planned. Our website does mention inclement weather cancellations, and while that may seem crazy for Oregon, we take safety as a top priority and the rain makes braking on the tracks more difficult, as well as making the inclines harder to navigate. We did offer refunds for those cancelled trips due to the weather, and we are glad that you were able to take advantage of the offer. We realize this was a disappointment for you, and we are sorry that we put a damper on your first anniversary. We are working to make upgrades to the bikes to help them handle the Oregon rain in a safer manner, so we hope you will consider riding with us again.
