My husband and I visited Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor our way down the West Coast and our only regret is that we didn't have more time to spend there. There are a ton of little areas to stop at and take in the view. It was all very beautiful! We were there on a very sunny day but we're hoping next time we get some of the Pacific Northwest's signature fog. Definitely stop here if you are in the area! The Oregon coast is so uniquely stunning!

Hwy 101. There's good signage to the various beaches & viewpoints. Some pit toilets also. 12 miles of beautiful areas of coastline.
We noticed a lot of people camping at the various pulloffs & parking areas. I guess that's a thing in Oregon. We saw it all up & down the coast.

We stopped at nearly every scenic park along the coast. This is a great string of parks with a variety of hikes and view points. Sebastian point is the longest hike and well worth it especially when there are large waves.

Be sure to hit as many stop spots along this corridor as you can. They all have different views of the scenic beaches--and quite a few that you can take a nice stroll on. Read about Samuel Boardman at House Rock Scenic Viewpoint to learn what a wonderful thing he did to preserve the coastline.

So many great beaches, hikes and lookout points along the way. If you are driving this route, make sure to stop often and early to avoid any crowds ( we didn't see many). Some of our favourite stops on our trip were in this corridor.

We were traveling down 101 from Seattle to San Francisco and wanted to experience the Oregon coastline. This stretch of highway might be my favorite! We stopped at a couple of the overlooks to take a few pictures but the best part of this Scenic Corridor is what you cannot see from 101. We ventured down on unmarked path to Secret Beach. Breath taking views and we had the entire beach area to ourselves.

I could spend a month hiking and enjoying the rugged coastline in this area. The beauty is breath-taking. Chasing the light play on the crashing waves and massive rocks is a fun challenge. The sunsets are inspiring.

We drove along route one stopping and getting off to pier down at the best is below.. Loan ranch beach, Whales head beach & hidden beach were just beautiful. The private beaches below w, rocks at the shore & foliage were outstanding. Each overlook had a small parking lot and lots of well marked trails

We spent 1 day driving the area, starting in the North, near Coos bay, and driving all the way down into California to visit the Redwoods, but this was by far and away my favorite part of our trip. Secret Beach was definitely my favorite stop along the places to stop, but Arch Rock, Whaleshead and Natural Bridges Overlook were all amazing as well. This is an absolute, something everyone should do at some point. It was incredible.

This has been on my bucket list and was even more beautiful than I imagined. I love that the area is dog friendly too. The corridor feels quiet and isolated but you have Brookings and Gold Beach right there for all the conveniences. Definitely worth the trip.

We are traveling from Crater Lake to Samuel Boardman and traveling up the coast to Florence is two -three days be long enough ?
Written 10 January 2021
3 days would give you a more leisurely drive and time to make more stops if you'd like. After we left the coast to go inland to Crater Lake, we couldn't wait to get back on the coast where it was cool. We were there in late July 2020.

What is the best time of day for photography? Nice sunsets there? Thanx😀

August when it isn't cloudy. I would start in the early morning and shoot all day. You could spend all day at Samuel Boardman state park and still not see it all.

Hi. My wife and I will be staying in Gold Beach for three nights next week. I really like the sound of driving the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor, but my wife is disabled and can't do the trails. She can stand a bit and walk just a little, but mostly gets around in a wheelchair. On the other hand, I am healthy and in my spare time do a great deal of hiking in Utah where I live. So it's kind of hard for us to travel, because I want to do the hiking down to things or up to things as the case may be, and often she is left in the car. I guess what I'm wondering is will there be places along this scenic corridor that she can get to in a wheelchair, or places to sit and view things from the parking area, while I scramble down the trails? Thanks!!

Sorry for your difficult situation. Where I went it would not have been suitable. Where I parked was a few hundred yards from coast views and walks. I am not saying that a suitable park could not be found somewhere but it may not be easy.

We will be driving through this area on our way up the coast. We're going from San Fran to Vancouver in 14 days (with a 3 day stay in Victoria, BC so we're trying our best to figure out how much time we will want to spend in each area. Can anyone tell me how long would be long enough to get a decent feel of Samuel H. Boardman SP. It sounds lovely and I'm sure we could enjoy the area for days but we only have hours, will we be extremely rushed? What are the must sees along that corridor? Thank you!

This is a tough one. Rudy F has provided good suggestions, but I am torn if you plan on heading north along the Oregon coast since there are quite a few places that are worth experiencing. So what I am thinking choose something like Rudy F suggested but don't spend a whole day just doing stops and hikes in Boardman SP. Here are some other places worth considering: Sunset Bay SP near Coos Bay, especially if there is at least moderate surf - the waves crashing there are spectacular; Haceta Head lighthouse north of Florence; Sea Lion Caves near Florence if you feel like spending some money for admission - otherwise stop in Newport and observe tons of sea lions in the harbor area ... for free; Devils Churn; Cape Perpetua; Cape Foulweather; tour the Tillamook Cheese factory in Tillamook ... free samples!. There are a bunch of other scenic areas/parks, many of which are like those I suggested above that require less than an hour or maybe an hour or two to take in. If you want to stop and really explore an area, Boardman SP is fine, and you could spend a day there - we did and enjoyed the various spots within the park. But if you want more variety you could consider my suggestion of a little here and a little there along the coast. One other thing, it is often only in the 60's and windy along the coast - jackets might be welcome. It is not built up along the coast so don't expect high rise condos and big fancy restaurants. Some of the hole in the wall restaurants are the best. Enjoy !

Are any of the pullouts large enough for a large motorhome and tow car?
Written 29 September 2016
In our experience, most pullouts are big enough for a motorhome but the addition of a tow car would make it problematic, if not impossible. Some of the parking areas for lookouts, etc. should be able to accommodate a mid-size motorhome but it would be a lot easier if you could find a place (i.e., at a motorhome park--check out the one at Whaleshead) for the night and then use your tow car. You will enjoy it much more, and there are lots to see in and around Brookings, making the night definitely worth it!

Would this be a good beach location to get married ? We haven't been here but are looking for something special in the area. Thank you for your time.
Written 16 September 2015
I'd have to agree with the others. If you can go further north, you might consider Oswald West or Ecola State Parks -they're both between Manzanita and Cannon Beach. Ecola has several beaches within the park and considerable parking. Oswald West is smaller, but a real jewel. If you're not planning an enormous wedding, there's parking lot on Hwy 101 - you walk down a paved trail through rain forest to the beach.

How do we find Secret Beach and Emerald Bay? They are unmarked and we spend a day unsuccessfully trying to find tehm or the trails. Locals also couldn`d direct us

Secret beach is a tricky one. You have to go at a very low tide (- tide) to get there. If you have a guide to the coastal trail you will take the hike to THUNDER COVE. It is a beautiful trail through forest and drops down to the beach. It is a bit dicey at the beach end because you have to be very careful over giant rocks and have excellent shoes!! And walking sticks wouldn't hurt either. Then you are on the beach at thunder cove and it is very cool. There are great places to explore to the right. To the left is the access to Secret Beach. If the tide is high forget any of this... there won't be enough beach to go right or left. If it is a summer - low tide you can walk around the rocky boulders to the left to get to Secret Beach. Even a -low tide in the winter would make this dangerous.

Can you camp here? And are there any fees or anything for camping if you can?
Written 12 April 2015
Samuel H Boardman State Park is for day use only. Harris Beach, which is within the Brookings city limits has a wonderful campground ! It get very busy in the summer season.
