Museum was a 3. Nicely done, small, small town museum. Display we went for, Nordic skiing, was under construction. (Dirt bikes, the currant display, not our thing.)
Local history of “Spanish” flu compared to COVID was interesting.
Go if you like history and have time.

I went to the Des Chutes Historical Museum initially to research some family history. The people on duty went above and beyond to help me with that project. The displays and information at the museum are very interesting and well done. I appreciate the rotating programs and displays that are offered.

This fabulous Bend attraction is a true gem! Their current Gen. Fremont exhibit is world class and deserves your visit. So detailed and the stories so compelling. They have the Fremont lost (now found) Sierra Howitzer and the Palmetto sword given him by the good citizens of South Carolina! The other exhibits of Old Bend and the surrounding area are likewise fascinating. Thank you, Historical Society...for making this happen. What a treat!

The local museum in Bend currently offers a fabulous exhibition on John C Fremont, America's Pathfinder, who established the Oregon Trail, providing the pioneers with essentially an early days 'rough guide' to get from Kansas to Oregon.
Bend-based photographer Loren Irving followed the great explorer's route from the Dalles via Nevada and California (and lots in-between) and took photographs of the various campsites of the exploring party. Mr Irving was at the museum when I visited, which made the exhibition even more interesting. If you happen to be in the Brend area before the end of 2015, do spend an hour to see that exhibition.
The permanent exhibition of the Deschutes Historical Museum is charming and for European visitors perhaps on the amusing side: familiar kitchen utensils from the 1920-1970 are shown next to living room furniture; a class room from the mid 1910s/20s (the museum is housed in the main former school of Bend); a one-horse open sleigh, dresses and ladys' accessories from the 1910s onwards; old-fashioned tills, tools and other every-day utensils. Native American Indians don't get much coverage here, though the High Desert Museum has an excellent exhibition on local tribes.
Still, a lot of love and care has gone into this museum and offers not just an insight into life of times gone by in Bend, but also shows quite how recent it was that settlers came to Bend.

Do support this little gem. Lots of photos and memorabilia from Old Bend... Definitely worth checking out and supporting. It is located in a lovely old building that was once a school

Volunteer staff were very friendly and informative. Good displays and information on the history of the area, we quite liked the notice warning not to put a naked flame to the Edison electric light.

The Nordic Ski exhibit is very interesting. We learned much about the skiing in Bend and how it came about. Great exhibit.

We visited after lunch as we were wanting to know more information on the local area. History, why was it established-that sort of thing. That is not what it is though. The bottom floor was two exhibits on nordic skiing. Upstairs was a couple rooms of antiques. Very little on how it pertains to life in this area.Good room on an old school house during that time but that was it. I left there still not knowing what brought people to Bend, why did it get established? Just antiques (which I love!) with labels. Disappointed in this one.

Visited to research old family homesteading records. Received excellent support from staff and volunteers. The exhibits are also well-researched and comprehensive.

Great place to go on a rainy day. Exhibit on Fremont on first floor ...second floor other exhibit about Bend' s history antiques, lumber industry, clothing and a classroom.
