    Learn about Volcanoes
Our kids LOVED this visit! We stopped (unplanned) after seeing some road signs. We arrived late in the day, so we didn’t have a reservation for the cave (although that looked like GREAT fun). The kids did the Jr Ranger program, we learned a lot about volcanoes and walked the Trail of Molten Land. We would definitely recommend this stop!

Don't Miss the Big Obsidian Flow
When people think about volcanos in the Pacific Northwest, they usually think of Mt. St. Helens and maybe Crater Lake. Newberry should be on that list - perhaps even more impressive than either of these because of the greater variety. We highly recommend the Big Obsidian Flow. It is a huge lava flow of pumice and obsidian that is just amazing. From the top, there is a beautiful landscape all influenced by volcanoes. It is best to pair this visit with going to the visitor's center to understand more about the area around, but there are informational plaques on the walk. Wear good shoes - obsidian is sharp.

    The Big Obsidian Flow!
So much fun in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. After visiting Paulina Falls, we drove further to the Big Obsidian Flow trailhead. We loved this hike. We made our way up to the 2nd park bench and got some great pictures. So amazing. And if you're a LOTR fan, you can pretend you're Frodo and Sam heading into Mordor. Ha! "One does not simply walk into Mordor." - unless you're here at the Big Obsidian Flow. :-)

We took the shuttle up to the top which was really nice. The museum was informative and relaxing. There was a walk up but we didn't take that although what we did walk was great. All iin all a very nice visit.

We enjoyed the views and the explanation of the boards and got our questions answered by the Ranger.

What a wonderful place; so many types of different and unique things to do and see. One day is not sufficient to see all the attractions. The Lava River Cave is a timed entry tour that takes some preplanning. The visit to Lava Butte requires a ticketed shuttle ride from the visitor center. Paulina Peak and Paulina Falls require some driving but are worth a visit. Benjamin Falls is another waterfall after a half mile beautiful hike along the Deschutes River. Do not miss the Molten Land paved trail near the Lava Lands visitor center.
Newberry National Volcanic Monument is an absolutely gorgeous place.

The Newberry Crater volcanic monument is very interesting. The visitor centre is a good 1st stop to learn about the history. The ranger was super friendly and very enthusiastic. Drive up to the top of the cone for fab views and walks.

The southern part of the national monument was well worth the extra drive from Bend. We loved our hike on the obsidian flow, though it required care. Appreciated the picnic tables there as well. Spent time on East Lake, a relaxing shoreline walk. The peak might have been interesting has there not been haze from the nearby fire, but we skipped it.

We only had time to visit lava lands visitor center area. We drove up to the top of the lava butte, walked the trail on the top. It was interesting to see the red crater.
We then drove to the visitor center, walked the trail behind it. It was lava field with paved trail, there were many plants with yellow flowers. It was very beautiful. We fully enjoyed the trail.
