Hiking around Paulina lake which is part of the caldera is an annual highlight for us. About 7 miles but level ground. Great camping areas for summer but it can get crowded. A bit remote and about 30 minutes from US 97. The access road is usually closed from November thru late May so check with the Park Service before... More

The lava beds are amazing. The scenic drives are worth every minute and there is so much to do in surrounding areas too. We will most definitely be back.

I love exploring central Oregon and seeing a volcano that once erupted here is great. It's mainly open in the summertime but you can still walk around and look at all the lava. Make sure you or your kids fall. It would not be pleasant falling on all that sharp rocks.

We went to see this place and drove in for about 10 miles from the highway and the road is closed. No sign on the highway that it is currently closed. Also , note that this is a calderra where you have to drive southeast . We have a GPS, google map and map quest app and they all had... More

This is actually where NASA trained their astronauts in preparation for walking on the moon as the volcanic lava landscape is very similar to that of the moon! It is a great scenic and barren area of lava with a little scrubby landscape and a lot of little striped golden mantle ground squirrels that look like chipmunks and a scenic... More

Apparently the visitor center is not open during the winter. So we were sadly disappointed since I had not read that it was closed. Also many of the exits are closed from the highway and few roads if any are maintained during the winter and spring months. March 21st and snow still covered most of the roads.

We visited the Paulina Falls and Big Obsidian Flow after going to the Lava Lands Visitor Center, which is about 20 minutes away. Definitely worth to see both to understand the vast extent of the Newberry Volcano. However, you'll have to learn about it mostly on your own with the provided plaques as there were no people about that worked... More

This is a great place to go camping or for just a day trip. We used to make it an annual trip to take our horses to the Chief Paulina Horse Camp and had a thoroughly wonderful time. Lots of riding trails and decent corrals. Every site has 2 or 4 individual 10x10 corrals. Unfortunately our horses are too old... More
