- scott rSilver Spring, Maryland784 contributions3.5 stars really = good - wide variety of old carousel horses and a functioning merry go roundIt was nice to see the craftsmanship on these old horses, and there was a carver working. You get some idea of the history of the craze but it is an hour stop with (if you join) a well meaning and very nice older person giving a tour that tends to go on just a little too long (all but the most diehard really aren't going to follow the distinction between one artist and the other or 4 seat vs 2 seat carriage end panels). It's pretty, it's cute, it's budget friendly.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 28 June 2024
- Freedom73215719 contributionsAbsolutely AmazingAlthough small, this was a wonderful place to visit. There are beautiful carousel figures that just take your breath away. We took a ride on the merry go round in the center of the museum and was surprised at how fast it turns. Also, kudos to the young gentleman working there. He was very polite and thoughtful when talking to us about the museum. FYI, there was a group of special needs guests there the day we visited and they were all treated as the special people they are. I was so so pleased.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 July 2024
- TeeannSacramento, California32 contributionsGreat MuseumThe old post office building is a perfect location for a carousel. So great the museum found a home and the building didn't get torn down. Fun to ride the carousel. We have ridden several around the country. They have a lot of animals on display with informative signage. Am very glad we stopped.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 July 2024
- RICART75Peru, Indiana2,456 contributionsGreat find....This was such a great find, while we were exploring downtown Sandusky. Housed in an architecturally interesting building; this museum is a tribute to the art and craftmanship of the carousel. Certainly, a highlight is riding the merry-go-round within; but we were really engaged by the numerous examples of historic carousel animals. The history, creativity, workmanship and beauty associated with these sculptures is an aesthetic uplift. What really enhanced the experience, for us, was the presence of the site staff person Bonnie. She was knowledgeable, informative and accommodating; answering our questions with patience and humor. (We really appreciated her story about, and suggestion to find, the horse with a carved knot in its tail; which we did.) One of the joys of travel, is finding gems like this along the way.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 September 2024
- Donna EKlein, Texas537 contributionsInteresting MuseumAdmission gets you a ride on a restored, full-sized carousel inside the museum! So many examples of historic wooden carousel sculptures. Lots of information regarding history, and a working workshop for wood sculpture.Visited October 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 October 2024
- ermagertzWexford, Pennsylvania276 contributionsa unique museum for a great interestThis is a great museum for anybody who enjoys carousels, band organs and the history of things like this. They have an operating carousel and currently a Cedar Point room with a ton of unique items to see that will have some changing items so make sure you go back to see it. There is so much to see here, and so much to learn. I have been going here for many years and still enjoy seeing what they have on display and continue to learn when I go. Please support this unique museum, it's so wonderful in the old post office building which is perfect for a carousel!Visited December 2024Travelled soloWritten 7 January 2025

Nice little museum. Wanted something to do for a little bit on rainy afternoon while staying in the area and found this place on TA. $6 for adult admission included ride on Merry Go Round. It is small but looking at all the amazing carvings of the different animals was worth it. They are many hand carved animals from the turn of the century. From all over the US, many survived different disasters like hurricans.
Worth the stop if you want something off the beaten path to do for around an hour.
Friendly staff willing to answer questions and provide information. Little gift shop too.

This museum contains genuine craftsman works of art. The old carved and intricately painted merry go round animals are truly beautiful pieces. a ride on the carousel in the middle of the museum is included in the cost of the visit. A visit wont take a long time but is well worth a stop.

We didn't plan on being there for two hours last week, but we were with all to see in this very unique carousel museum with a low entry fee that includes a free ride on the indoor merry-go-round and the ability to see so many different carousel carvings of animals and characters of all kinds. The curators were very informative, and this museum was very enjoyable. We highly recommend visiting this museum inside the old Sandusky post office building! It's ADA accessible and great for people of all ages with ample parking right outside of the building.

This was a nice visit of the history of merry go rounds and carousels. It's a small museum that will only take you a couple of hours to visit but it's packed with history. The day we visited there wasn't anyone else visiting the museum (a weekday morning visit) but a volunteer that was working in the carving section was very knowledgeable and gave us some nice detailed information. This is a nice treasure to have right here near home. Carousels from all over the world come here to be repaired or refurbished. It's neat to see one of the horses that was on display at the White House for the Christmas season a few years back. There are crayon rubbings spread out throughout the museum that my daughter enjoyed and she was able to get a squished penny as a nice momentum. They also have a nice gift shop. We really enjoyed our ride on the old merry go around which is included in your admission fee.

Just a little trip to Sandusky and went to ride a carousel. The carousel goes faster then we expected which made it a lot of fun. The horses are very ornate and in excellent shape. A woodcarver was working on a horse and you got to see a true artist.

This is such a special little museum! We went with our kids and some extended family and had a great time. We lucked out that as soon as we got there they were about to run the carousel. Our kids were able to ride, then walk around the museum before enjoying a second ride before leaving. The horses and other menagerie animals are gorgeous and for the price, you really can't beat it. They even turned on one of their band organs so we could hear it. Definitely worth a stop!

Housed in an beautiful art deco building that used to be the post office, there is more here than just a carousel. Probably about 100 rare and beautiful carousel animals on display here and some of the carvings are over 100 years old.
Cost about $20 for a family of four to visit. Paid admission includes one ride each on the antique carousel. Takes about an hour to see everything.
Only suggestion would be to give the lady that runs things here some help. She had to take admissions, answer questions, run the gift shop, and man the carousel all by herself. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of what is on display here, so she is a great resource.
Look for the carved elephant with a basket and ask her about the history of this carousel figure.
Museum is located downtown and there is free parking in the lot behind the museum.

This was a last minute decision, and it did not disappoint. I was unsure if my seven year old would enjoy it, but they had several interactive things for children. The displays were clear, the information was interesting, and the craftsmanship of the displays was amazing. Admission includes one ride on the beautiful carousel, with the option to purchase more tickets for $1 each. My daughter loved that she was able to buy a button of the horse she rode on the carousel. This was a very fun way to spend 1 to 1.5 hours.

I was pleasantly surprised by this museum. It had an amazing collection including exquisite animal figures that were so unique. There were different examples showing the stages of how they are carved from the wood blocks and painted. The docents were also very informative about the history of carousels, and you also get a ride on their carousel as part of your admission. I also liked the Euclid Beach Park memorabilia exhibit.

We thoroughly enjoyed the museum. The ladies on staff were very knowledgeable of the items on display. Even got to take a nostalgic ride on a carousel (included in the price of admission). Inexpensive, clean, fun and entertaining.

The museum is wheelchair accessible. I do not believe they provide wheelchairs, but recommend that you call ahead and ask.

Is the old carousel from Momauguin, Connecticut located there? I have heard it was in Ohio or California. Someone said it was at Circus Circus in Las Vegas, but my sister in law and brother in law checked and it was not.

1. Is the museum open to visitors on the 24th and the 25th of December, 2015?
2. What are the activities that an 18 month old child may enjoy at the museum?

I believe that a small RV can be parked successfully in the parking areas around the Museum. I'm almost certain that you'll have no problems finding parking very near the museum.
