About
The Georgian Museum is located in one of Lancaster's three National Historic Districts, and exemplifies early 19th century American craftsmanship. Built originally for Samuel and Sarah Maccracken in 1832 by local builder Daniel Sifford, the home embodies features of both Federal and Greek Revival architecture. The structure is unlike any other built by Sifford, with its double-curved wall along a two-storied portico supported by fluted Ionic columns and windows that opened to the floor for access to the veranda. Throughout the house twelve-foot ceilings draw attention to stunning woodwork, archways and chandeliers. Rooms have been restored to reflect the period of the Maccracken's residence from 1832 to 1852, with appropriate wall and floor coverings, and historic furnishings, including many pieces made in Fairfield County during the first half of the 19th century.

Worth the time and money

Beautifully restored home, great tour and a live tour guide. Reasonably priced. If you love seeing inside the old homes and hearing their history, you'll want to put this on your list. Be sure and tour the Sherman House just a couple blocks away while you are in the area.

This historic house museum went beyond expectations with more furnishings included than most museums and very good tour guides, as well as a great gift shop.

Opulent and beautiful
May 2021 • Couples
A beautiful example of extreme wealth in the early 1800’s. Most impressive is the cantilevered spiral staircase which leads up three floors. The home’s double curved wall along the two story portico is supported by fluted Ionic columns. Such an accomplishment for this time period.
Several furnishes where saved from the garbage heap in the early 70’s when the home was scheduled to be demolished. Fortunately the Fairfield County Heritage Association stepped in and fought to save the home.
A glimpse of this opulent lifestyle puts you back in time. You could almost imagine the people of this home moving around in day to day life. My personal favorite was the remarkable kitchen in the basement of this home.
So very impressive and a great walk through Ohio history.

Fascinating history and excellent staff
Nov 2020
The staff were all kind and COVID precautions in place were very satisfactory. Our docent, in particular, was outstanding. He was not just knowledgable, but passionate about the history of the museum — to the point that he was willing to backtrack through several rooms of the museum *after it closed* and answer more of our questions.

The museum lends insight not only into the mansion itself, but into broader life and society at that time. My girlfriend and I picked the tour on a bit of a whim and we're very glad we did.

Our docent, Marilyn, was fabulous. Both volunteers were friendly and informative. Lancaster Ohio is worth a visit. They have three other museums within walking distance and within a graceful setting. A very pretty town.

Authentic sample of the early 1800's in America.
Aug 2019
The Georgian is a beautifully restored mansion in one of the National Register Historic Districts in Lancaster, and it is well worth the designation. It was built in the early 1800's in classic Federal style on the original plat that founded the town, locally called "Square 13", and well represents a vital piece of American history. The Georgian is now an exceptionally detailed public-friendly museum. You can go solo or join a guided tour group. I recommend solo, because you are going to want to take your time and look at every item and every detail in each room. It is fully decorated in authentic period style with furniture, artwork, personal items, lovely crystal chandeliers, rugs, and more. Many of the items were made locally. It is really a very intriguing place to spend several hours, and well worth a visit even if you are not a history buff. I have been there several times, and it never fails to fascinate me.

Great way to get back in time...
Nov 2019
The house is just awesome. I like older homes and buildings as there was a lot of effort that went into building them with character not just a place to live or work in like today's cookie cutter homes and buildings ... The architecture detail is spot on for the home as it was saved and brought back to life when it was renovated. A must see if your in the big metropolis of Lancaster Ohio visiting from April to November....

Beautiful home, great tour

This is a lovely home with a unique collection of pieces. The decor in most of the ground floor rooms is in blues and golds. The tour guide personalized it for our family of various age ranges.
