About
The Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, Ohio, is the birthplace of Civil War Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman and his younger brother U.S. Sen. John Sherman (Sherman Antitrust Act). The ground floor of the home is furnished much as it would have been when the Shermans lived there. The front parlor contains many furnishings from the general's home in New York City. The second floor houses a recreation of Sherman's Civil War tent; interactive exhibits and an array of war and GAR artifacts. The gift shop features Civil War and local history books as well as puzzles, games and more. Because of the Covid pandemic, tours are offered at 12, 1, 2 & 3pm and are limited to 8 visitors at a time. Guides and visitors must wear masks. (Available for a dollar donation.) Tickets may be purchased in advance at website or at the door if any tickets remain.

Fun morning to tour a piece of history

I found the tour guides very knowledgeable. Very interesting and accurate. The house is not very big but it was not overwhelming. Can't imagine 11 kids there.

Super great museum!

This is definitely a hidden gem. The house itself is beautiful and well kept. The inside is full of period furniture and art, including lots of things that belonged to the Sherman family and General Sherman himself. The guided tour is fascinating! Both the ladies working up front when I visited were wonderful. There's also a little gift shop inside with some great souvenirs.

Be aware they only let people in on the hour. Not knowing this, I arrived on the half hour. Not a problem - there are gardens to walk around and little coffee shops and stores nearby to pass the time. Just letting you know!

We Found Sherman House museum by chance when visiting the charming town of Lancaster OH. We had a wonderful tour and the volunteers were very knowledgeable about the home and history. Great shopping in their gift shop! A must see if visiting the Hocking Hills area!

Worth the time and money

Enjoyed our visit. Love seeing inside these old homes and hearing the history of the former owners. Reasonably priced. Live tour guide. Be sure to see the Georgian House Museum 2 blocks away. You get a deal for doing both in the same day!

All of it! The house, the artifacts, the knowledge of the guide. Well worth the $4.00 senior admission. If you are a civil war buff, don’t miss this gem!

Sherman House Museum's Focus
Jul 2021 • Couples
The Sherman House Museum offers a nice combination of furnishings from that time period, an insightful tour led by a knowledgeable guide who covers the Sherman family history with various Sherman personalities, and a historical display of the Civil War era with special focus on General William Tecumseh Sherman.

Not enough time
Jul 2021 • Couples
The volunteers were so kind and well educated. So much to see. The only negative was that the beginning of the tour moved very slowly then we reached the really interesting part at the end it was very rushed so the guide could get done and back to the next group coming through. I would love to have seen more of the end of the tour.
