About
The Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, Ohio, is the birthplace of Civil War Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman and his younger brother U.S. Sen. John Sherman (Sherman Antitrust Act). The ground floor of the home is furnished much as it would have been when the Shermans lived there. The front parlor contains many furnishings from the general's home in New York City. The second floor houses a recreation of Sherman's Civil War tent; interactive exhibits and an array of war and GAR artifacts. The gift shop features Civil War and local history books as well as puzzles, games and more. Tours are offered at 12, 1, 2 & 3pm Tickets may be purchased in advance at website or at the door if any tickets remain.

The guided tour was outstanding the curator was extremely knowledgeable about the Sherman family history, the building and General Sherman. The house and grounds are very well kept and the furnishings were authentic to the period.
I really enjoyed this tour and learned quite a bit regarding the history of the area and the Sherman family.
I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the early history of General Sherman.

A nice blend of exhibits that highlight both Sherman's upbringing and his Civil War service. Docents are pleasant and helpful. Even the street outside helps one understand where he came from.

This is definitely worth a visit and the tour guides are very knowledgeable and gracious. The group responsible for preserving and caring for this property has done a remarkable job. This tour is great if you are looking for a house tour of this period and simply seeing where Sherman grew up. Unfortunately the tour does not really include the larger story of the man, the soldier, and his key role in the Civil War. The tour only lightly touches on that aspect focusing more on Sherman’s family and parents and features of the house. The house tour abruptly ended on the first floor of the house where we were told to continue self-guiding on the second floor and read about the artifacts and exhibits. The second floor is really excellent but there is such a great story that the tour guides are not giving about these exhibits and their significance to Sherman’s life. Instead, you are left to read the many written narratives yourself and assemble the life story of Sherman in your own imagination. This is unfortunately typical of the National Park Service approach to many historical sites but this amazing place has the opportunity to do so much more. Even if the number of tour guides is limited, add at least another 15 minutes to the tour on the second floor to focus on the life story of this man and soldier. The short 5 minute General Sherman film was good but still needs the tour guides to expand on the story.

This was an easy tour providing Sherman information not generally taught and a fine display how people lived during the period.
Tours take place at specific times so plan ahead.
Sherman’s upbringing is discussed in the context of his family’s history where you learn or are recalled to remember Sherman came from a more privileged background than many and contributed to him beginning a military career.
I thought the recreated rooms were good examples of period life and kudos to the guides who explain the nature of furniture and decorating which are not always evident today. Likewise, the small gardens outside are worth noting for how people of the time grew plants for medicinal purposes and not just food.

Nice 45 minutes tour of this historic place in this fine small town in central Ohio. It contains some nice artifacts from the Sherman family; and upstairs, in addition to the master bedroom, there are nice Civil War related items.

I loved seeing the guns, I also found it interesting how small the bathtubs were! The people there were very kind too!

We enjoyed our tour of the Sherman House Museum on 4/6/2022. Our Docent, John, was excellent. He guided us through the house and then allowed us to view the upstairs museum portion on our own. He was standing by in case we had questions. Very informative - things that we didn't learn in history class.

We enjoyed our tour of the home where General William Sherman spent several of his childhood years. The home is beautiful and staff were friendly. Jim gave a great tour. Hours are limited and tours are on the hour. Admission fee reasonable, You can learn about Shermans life and military career here. Really liked the military camp display and other items from military life. They have a small gift shop . Parking is on the street and free. Nice downtown area. Any Civil War or history lover would like this place!
