Highfield Historic Site is an 1830's farm complex built by convict labor. The Van Diemen's Land Company chose to settle in the area to establish a large scale sheep grazing property. The site is open to the public and interprets the conflicts that arose with the Company's men and the Aboriginal people. The house and outbuildings are being restored by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service as the property had fallen into disrepair.

The site is open daily from 1 September - 31 May, open weekdays from 1 June - 31 August

This is a must see for anyone traveling to Stanley. Situated high up on the hill above the town there are great views from the windows and grounds of the house. Everything is kept in excellent condition and cared for by volunteers. There is a story told of people when they arrived in the area. All very interesting and well... More

Amazing how people lived in total isolation. Great history, very well laid out so that you can also get a sense of what it would have been like back then. Convict built, the house has stood the test of time. Worth spending an hour or so walking through.

Wandering around old houses can be boring. Not this one; if you are interested in how the Stanley area was developed and by whom, original documents are displayed in a very easy to read way. We were fascinated for 2 hours and also enjoyed the outbuildings and gardens. Well worth it.

The house was all lit up the night we arrived and we were intrigued to find out about it so visited the next day. A very knowledgeable Parks officer gave us an interesting account of the house, the family and the history of the Van Diemens company then left us to explore. The visit gave us a good background of... More

My 6 year old granddaughter wanted to go here. I have been to much better historic houses but they cost more for entry & this one will be good once they finish the restoration work. My granddaughter loved it & we went around every bit of it twice. It has inspired me to take her to some more historic places... More

We stopped by here just thinking we would have a quick look. We got sucked in by the history and the well laid out rooms. The staff were very helpful. The buildings are still in various states of being restored. It is fabulous to be able to look through the rooms and touch ( not everything ) some of the... More

We are history buffs so this was awesome for us. The talent that it took during this time period to build this homestead is amazing.
