For some, the thought of spending time at a fish hatchery is not high on their list of things to do. The Salmon Ponds Heritage Hatchery and Gardens changed my mind in an instant. Amid a lovely park and garden are a series of trout ponds housing a variety of trout and salmon. At certain times of the year, visitors... More

An easy drive from Hobart the Salmon Ponds is an inexpensive way to fill in some of the day. We had fun feeding the fish & strolling around the beautifully kept gardens. Would suggest rugging up as it was pretty chilly walking around. Would be great for families as plent of space for kids to run & roam plus area... More

We called in to the Salmon Ponds on the way to Mt Field National Park. I am not one for Salmon fishing but there was more here than I thought. There was a pleasant cafe as well as a Salmon Fishing museum. My wife liked feeding the Salmon that literately swarmed in the water. The grounds were well maintained and... More

Have visited the Salmon Ponds previously, but would not miss the chance to visit again. Lovely grounds, great cafe, and the fish are amazing.

A great stop off on the way to Mt. Field. The grounds were very well kept and beautiful. The trout and salmon feeding was fun and the information on trout and salmon was informative without being boring. There was a variety of different fish species and the Plenty River nearby offers viewing of platypus (although we didn't see any). There... More

We visited while staying in New Norfolk on our Tasmanian trip. This is a fantastic place with great insights into a little known facet of Australian History. The information on the arrival of trout in Australia and the history of the individuals that pioneered guiding for enthusiasts is absolutely fascinating. The small museum which covers many facets of trout fishing... More

I love visiting the salmon ponds. It's an easy drive from Hobart and an inexpensive way to pass a few hours. Lots of families enjoying picnics for Mother's Day. We ate at the cafe - ok but you have to like pancakes! The little walk along the river is lovely and we saw some eels....

The Salmon ponds are set in beautiful park like grounds with easy access and fish feeding facilities. All on one level for ease of use by children and the disabled. Very interesting fishing memorabilia museum and breeding shed. Great in house cafe featuring delicious food with Salmon dishes. Well worth a visit.
