A decent sized car park accesses this fairly easy 15 minute walk (return) to a surprisingly stable long suspension bridge

Had a stop to look at the river and suspension bridge no toilet at car park next stop further down has facilities. This is the start of a few days hike day trippers look at river.

This one tops the list for me for the most spectacular scenery out of all the hikes I've done in Tassie. Did an overnighter to Frenchman's Cap (actually in December 2015) with a bunch of friends so some solid walking put in to achieve that. Camped at the base of the summit and managed to get to the summit in time to have a sunset dinner with perfectly clear 360 views as far as the western tiers and cradle mountain. The weather can be unpredictable so prepare accordingly, but this is definitely one walk you should put on your bucket list of hikes to do in Tassie!

We did this walk and ran into some unseasonal weather. Unfortunately snow and cloud stopped us getting to the peak but despite this it was a great walk. So pleased they have sorted out the Loddons and there is lots of work happening on the track this season. Its a two-three night walk and offers lots.

one of my favourite walks in Tassie, there's a long, relativey boring 20km walk to the good stuff...which is often almost 20km in waste deep mud bog and possibly inundated swing bridges...that all depends on time of year and rainfall.
Ol' Mate Dick Smith, a keen bushwalker was horrified at the state of the track when he attempted it and donated a lot of his hard earned $$ into track maintenance and the track is luxury...al most too luxury the last time I saw it. The exciting bit all happens when you reach the first hut and start climbing and clambering over rocks and the landscape changes dramatically. It is after this starts that you will see the landscape tha makes me love this so much. weather can change quite fast and track sometimes hard to follow as it darts up cliff faces, sometimes not the cliff faces you think! All part of the fun. Enjoy!!

Yes, frenchmans Cap is a several day hike. This reviews is for those looking for another short walk to do while driving from one end to the other of the Lyell Hwy. Park at the carpark for frenchmans cap hike and follow the start of the walk. Itd a every easy 15min return to the river where you can walk across on a one person cable bridge. Its a great walk for a quick stretch of the legs when driving long distances.

On Lyell Highway, at around 20 mins drivng west from Derwent Bridge towards Queenstwon, there is the start of several walking trails that could take several days, arriving at the mountain called Frenchmans Cap.
There is also a short walking trail (20 mins reurn) that lets you walk on a suspended bridge above the river, which is quite a nice experience.

Took a boat ride up this river, wonderful scenery, but surprisingly quiet, apparently there is no food value in the trees for any birds, so it seemed strange to not see any birds at all.

Apart from Federation Peak this is certainly one of the most spectacular multi day bush walks in Australia anyone can dream of. No point rushing so a five dayer seems appropriate. this also allows for a inclement weather day if needed. Early in the season is best before the majority of walkers start.

What surprised me about this challenging hike was that not only was Frenchmans Cap an incredibly beautiful mountain and fantastic to summit, there were so many other mountains around it that were equally as spectacular and how interesting the way the trail weaves among the peaks. The trail is easy to follow. However, care must be taken to follow the cairns (piles of stones) carefully when making the final climb up the summit. Weather is a massive consideration on this one and I would recommend having some flexibility/extra days in your schedule to wait for good weather conditions to summit. Extra time staying at either hut would not be time wasted as there is lots of potential for day walks and exploring using these huts as a base. Just remember you must be prepared for extreme weather conditions on this hike...
