There are several hikes in the area, from easy strolls around a lake to fairly steep hikes up to look out spots. The views were spectacular. You need to be prepared for rapid weather changes, especially in the Spring.

Sure, the walk around Dove Lake is spectacular, but taking time to spend a little more physical exertion traversing Marion;s lookout takes your trip to Cradle Mountain national Park to another level.
The trail is well marked, easily navigated although steep (with chains) in a small section near the summit. But the views from the top are absolutely spectacular.
A hidden gem amongst Tasmania's awesome natural beauty.

This walk leads to one of the best views of Cradle Mt, even better than the Dove Lake view. The catch is you'd need to hike for about 3hours. I'd recommend starting from Dove Lake and coming back via the Crater Lake and Crater Falls track to Ronny Creek carpark. You need to be reasonably fit. Walking sticks recommended. There's a steep climbing section but thankfully they installed chains for you to help with the climb. It's not easy but worth it esp on a clear sunny day. Those walking the overland track will be climbing to this lookout with their full backpacks hauling themselves up the chains!

We commenced at Dove Lake and walked to Lake Lilla and then to Wombat Pond and then up to the crest just below Marion's Lookout which sits at 1,200 Metres. You get fantastic views of Dove lake, Lake Lilla and Crator Lake along the way. From Crater lake head downhill (great) to Ronny Creek which is the start of the Overland Trail. It took about three hours maximum. There were parts that were strenuous but the views worth it even on a cold and misty day. A few strange animals were seen on the way along with many heading up to the Overland Trail on a cold summer's day (wearing shorts).

Provided the clouds have lifted, the view from Marions is stunning – 1200 metres up, and 360 degrees around the park taking in the whole of Dove Lake, Cradle Mountain, Crater Lake and beyond.
But this is a tough slog, whichever path you choose.
The easiest is the opening section of the Overland Track from Ronny Creek, which takes you across grassland, then into the trees, past a waterfall, Crater Lake, and up on to the saddle.
Here, you’re about 1100 metres up, and the views are very good, if you want to head back down from here. To make it to the lookout the last section is a slog up a steep section of rocks, using chains onto the top of the peak and the lookout. This will take you about 2 hours, and most people should be able to manage it, provided they are comfortable with the last chain haul.
The Lilla Lake Track from Dove Lake is also quite good – past Lilla Lake, up the staircase to Wombat Pool, then the steep section up to the saddle where you join the Overland Track and the steep clamber up the chain and rocks to the lookout.
The 3rd option is the climb up from the Dove Lake Circuit starting just behind the boathouse. This one is not for the faint-hearted as it is very steep, climbing 400 metres in half an hour, much of it up steep rock faces where you need to haul yourself up a chain with both hands. But, it is good for the time poor as it can be done, there and back, in under an hour, or, 2.5 hours as a diversion on the Dove Lake Circuit.
But only if the weather is good.

While a little tougher than some of the other walks around the park, it a definite if you have a reasonable level of fitness and don’t mind some rock scrambling. From the start at Ronnie Creek the button grass plains, pandani gullies and wombats make the first km or so of boardwalk interesting. Heading on up past Crater Lake and it’s boat shed is a beautiful location then on up to the lookout itself.
Stunning views in every direction await at the top and depending on the time, plenty of snow too. It was wet when we climbed and a little slippery, but the tracks a well formed and there is a chasing to hold onto through the steepest part.
I’d suggest good walking shoes/boots an windproof warm gear. A bit of work but so worth it.

We walked the Dove Lake track and took the Marion lookout link track. It was raining and the wind was really blowing strong. we were concerned about how steep and slippery the link track might be.
Although steep the path has timber treads that make steps up the first section than there is a chain link that helps up the steep rock faces it was actually a lot safer than we first thought.
At the turn off to the summit, where the link track joined the overland track we decided not to venture any further because of the wind and rain. Other walkers we passed on the way said the rangers recommended not going to the summit.
Great safe track just use common sense if the weather isn’t the best.

What a climb, I absolutely loved it, my friend hates me for dragging her up there, but she did well to make it to the top. The views are absolutely breathtaking, would absolutely recommend, we climbed up from the Dove Lake Circuit and came down via Wombat Pool. Stunning views all along the way.

Views from Marion’s lookout are exceptional and worth the tough hike up. I regret descending from the lookout to dove lake as the way down is very steep and tricky. In hindsight I would’ve ended at the Ronny Creek car park.

First, I walked the recommended route from Ronny Creek parking lot to Crater Falls to Marions Lookout. The final climb is a steep rocky area, but once you reach the top, you can see a wonderful view. It was an interesting course with grasslands, waterfalls, and rocks that were not monotonous. The weather was fine and I had time and energy, so I went to Kitchen Hut at the foot of Cradle Mountain, and then descended to Lake Dove via FaceTrack and Lake Wilks Track.

Hi, would runners/sneakers be ok for this hike. Or would hiking boots be recommended.
Written 25 January 2020
We saw plenty of people with sneakers/running shoes and they seemed fine. The challenge in not wearing hiking boots is negotiating the steeper sections and should the track become wet.

Hi, what is the walking distance between the Dove Lake car park and the Cradle Mountain apex?
Written 31 July 2017
Hi, Yes I agree with Jandal, Marion's lookout down to the car park can be a little steep downwards, I didn't do Marion's lookout this time because of a dodgy knew but yes it is rocky and steep with the chain rail, and certainly worth it :)
