I am local with a 4WD, so the road quality doesn't phase me. having said that, there has been significant improvements done on the 5km of dirt road to the car park for Anvil Rock, to the extent that any 2WD vehicle can easily handle it. No potholes or ruts (as of early January 2024). But another closure for more roadworks is planned for March so check ahead.
The view from Anvil Rock, and indeed from the short walk between the car park and the lookout, is awesome - almost the entire length of the Grose Valley is in view. Once at the lookout itself, which is entirely fenced for safety, you look directly across to the cliff face of Mt Banks, and Mt Hay off to your right (east).
There is an actual anvil on top of the lookout. The original anvil was tossed by brainless hoods into the valley. Good luck in getting its replacement off the ground.
if you make the effort to go, make sure you allow time for the short walk to the Wind-Eroded caves to the west, from the car park. The track has been upgraded. It's only 50 metres.

Wonderful Views and only about 7 kilometres from Blackheath. The road is dirt but in good condition. You can park quite close to the lookout but there are some steps to climb. There is an interesting wind eroded cave nearby.
The anvil on top was placed there during the Second World War but vandalised later and tipped into the valley. Retrieved by helicopter after some years and placed securely back on it's plinth.
The views across the Grose Valley are magnificent.

A little known look out spot which is quiet and stunning. Dirt road is fine for sedans. The Wind Eroded Cave is also great to see while there.

This is THE place to watch the sunset. Put aside an hour and stay until the night comes. On one side you get bright orange but back to the east it is dark and you can see the lights of Sydney twinkling through the night. Spectacular

We started off being the only visitors here this morning and could enjoy the view and the peace for a little while. Then about 11.30am a few small groups arrived so we were off. Nice lookout and only a short, although quite uneven, walk to the lookout.

There is a bit of a drive down a gravel road to get here. The walk to anvil rock is about 10 mins or less from the car. There is a chair on the way where you can sit and take in the views. This is a great lookout and not crowded compared to some of the more advertised lookouts.
Don't miss the wind eroded rock face, it's only a few minutes from the car.

We had not been to this lookout before. Exceptionally good views.
Part of the road leading to Anvil Rock Lookout is dirt, but easily navigated, with sensible driving.
Parking available and the walk from the parking area to the lookout is not difficult.
Location of Anvil Rock lookout prohibits tourist buses, so the spectacular views can be enjoyed without the crowds that you may endure at other locations.
The Wind Eroded Cave is located nearby and is also worth seeing whilst at this location.

Anvil rock is located in Blackheath at the end of Hat Hill Road.
It is about a 5k drive off the Great Western Highway and some of the access road is a little on the rough side.
The drive however is most certainly worth it.
Anvil Rock is a unique rock formation that can only impress.
It is a easy 5 min walk from the car park.
In addition to this you can walk a little further (around 10 mins) and look down into the stupendous Grose Valley.
The steepest descent into the valley is to be had not to far from here at Perrys Lookdown.
I have trekked up and down this track on a number of occasions. Believe you me, it is hard going both ways with the return ascent being rather strenuous especially on a hot day.
Is it worth it? You betcha:

What a fantastic view from Anvil Rock. If your eyesight is really good you can faintly see the Sydney CBD. Great place to take a bottle of wine and watch the sunset and the native birds frolic and sing.
